How do I figure out what kind of brake fluid?

Used about 10 lbs or so. It did the job fine, just leaked a bit because of the bad seal. Glad this reminded me of that small job I need to work on. New gasket.

For piece of mind and all that, the best way to do it is to drain and flush the system with alcohol and replace with new. then there is No question of what is in there. You know for sure.

Well....

We changed out the fluid last night. I'm not sure it was DOT4 or DOT5, given that it looked more like baby poo.

It was water soluable though, so all is well, I think. It's got NAPA's low moisture activity DOT4 in there now.

I have air in the system though, even though the brakes work better than they did prior. I need to bleed the system again.

As for which to use, I'll stick with DOT4 since it's easy to find. I've never even seen real silicone fluid at any of the local parts stores.

I still don't think it is air but your pads (and shoes), your car feels like my truck does after a car wash or when pulling a trailer you can tell you are pushing the brakes but they just don't grip.

I only say air in the system, because the pedal compresses like it does in my other sprite now, and it didn't do that beforehand.

The other sprite is due to leakage past the seals in the master cylinder.

Anyway, it's a 1500lb car, so it's not hard to make it stop. I've always got the e-brake, which is working well. I can lock the front tires on the car, and when I'm yanking the ebrake while using the foot brake, the car stops nice and level. I might need to buy new rear cylinders. I'm pretty sure one of the pistons (or more) is frozen right now.
