How do I dismantle a BN1 Speedo

Hi All, Both my rev counter and Speedo were missing the red and blue beads for Ignition and high beam lights. While I search for the real things I am using the beads from an old mini speedo.

The rev counter was easy and works well but I cannot work out how to dismantle the brass trip reset "thing" on the speedo.

Any tips ??

Hi Dougal, If my memory serves me correctly, You do not have to remove anything on the speedo except the face plate glass to replace the indicator bead.---Fwiw--Keoke

Well lets see I think the trip mechanism unscrews from the body then there are a couple of screws on the back that when removed will free the shell. The faceplate still has to be removed though I think.--Fwiw

Hi Keoke, The mini beads I am using are a larger diameter (same as the healey bead holder) so I need to remove the bead holder. To do this I need to get at the back of the dial.

This should show you all you want to know:

My BN2 speedo was not quite as easy to get the trip reset handle loose. I believe that I had to first remove the front & the dial, disconnect the rigid trip reset shaft, turn & twist the innards to exactly the right position to get the insides out of the case. I hope your's is easier. Follow the directions on noting the needle position when removing the needle & dial face.

As Keoke said, you only need to remove the glass if you want to replace the indicator colored window, which it appears that you have already done.

You can cut tiny pieces from colored index tabs & glue them in if you don't like the beads. Then you don't need to enlarge the holder.

Hi Dave thanks for that, I tried making the lenses out of beads but they never looked that good, and spotted the mini speedo in an auction. So went down that line. I don't have to enlarge the holder just remove it. I then file a little of the mini bead so it just slips in the holder hole. I guess I need to send some photos ....

BTW what does the original window/bead look like is it flat?

It's just a flat disc, inserted from the front, apparently anchored with a tiny drop of glue. Trying to remove the holder is likely to lead to a lot of disassembly.

Be careful when you disassemble. I was lucky enough to find both my missing discs in their respective houseings. A dob of superglue and they looked as good as (50 year old) new!
