How do I clean sand out of a ring & pinion?

In my other thread, trying to figure out why the power train locks up on our BE with a Datsun 5 speed, I mentioned pulling the pumpkin out of a spare axle assembly, and discovering that someone had drilled a small hole in the housing and then sand-blasted it, such that there's sand throughout the inside.
I'm okay with tossing the wheel bears if I should want to salvage those parts, but would sure appreciate any ideas as to how to clean all the sand out of the ring and pinion assembly, as I really don't want to disassemble/pay to have disassembled that finely machined and finely worn in assembly. Thanks, Doug

I suspect that the hole is actually a vent hole that didn't get blocked when media blasting. :madder: I have heard of people sloshing kerosene or some other solvent to clean things diffs but, from grease not sand. I think I would want to pull it apart and make sure it was properly clean. annoying though.

If you are pulling the bearings then the main diff assy is coming out any way. so it can go into a parts washer after you remove the bearings. Remember to mark the shims. Moss sells different shims that are installed on the outside of the bearings.
The big issue is the pinion bearing. most likely requires a tear down.
