How Cold is It?

Looks like I'm in the 12" band.

Thanks for the warning.

I think life just threw me a curve. What should I do?

We're actually getting a bit worried around here that we haven't got enough snow. Guess you folk sin the northeast are getting ours. Was actually in the high 30s and raining up here today, not good at all. About 80% of our drinking water comes from the snow melt in the spring, and we haven't had a good storm since December.

Oswego is about a 1/2 hour North of us. My mom and sister live there. Folks there think all the attention is pretty funny, 'cause it's just a way of life, living with "lake effect' My mom was telling me they all got a pretty good laugh about a reporter from Germany interviewing people at the grocery store.

My mom didn't get to work all week, because the Interstate was closed off and on all week. Most people have 4 wheel drive, or a friend that does, and during the breaks in the snow, they all make it to the store and the stores try to stay open. It draws everyone close together and if someone needs something, someone, or everybody pitches in.

They use front loaders and dump trucks to pile it up in fields and lots. They used to dump in into the river, but the State frowns on that now. They also have these really cool huge snow blowers on the front of some of the trucks that throw the stuff pretty far. They use a two tier push back system to cut the banks down and push it up higher.

We normally get a few hundred inches a year, but it's been real light until now. The snow mobile-ers were miserable until now.

Just saw the news, they're expecting some really cold arctic air to come tomorrow and the next day, that's more dangerous than the snow. AND, they're expecting a Nor'easter...woo-hoo.

I hate shovelling snow (10" so far - more on the way) at 4am, need more coffee.
Heads up out east, this is coming your way.
Ohh, now have blizzard warning issued, snow day?

Boy, it's winters like this that make me glad I have moved South. 45 years ago today, I would have been up on the roof shoveling snow off it before heading off to school!!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/eek.gif

When I lived in Bradford, Pa. The local populace felt the same way!!! The whole "Lake-effects" band to the east of HOMES must all feel like that!!

Yikes!! I just looked at the America weather map.
You poor SOBs. Mother nature beating up on
you again. All I've got beating me up is the crypt Car.

The doc won't let me fly, so I got me a pocket full of
frequent flyer tickets I can't use. Just gotta give em
away.

Crypty is just about to the point where someone who
really knows TR6 mechanics could probably get Crypty's
clutch installed, tranny back in and rear brake cylinders replaced in less than the four or five months it will
take me. I'm guessing maybe 2 days tops for a TR6 guru.

Anyone wanna trade blue colors for a r/t air, room with
a pool view, gourmet cooking and NO SNOW or COLD?
Give it some thought and send me a private or public message.

I just got back from there and made a serious promise to look into moving to Maine. Probably won't happen because of work, but I'm still going to look seriously into it.

Just got back, and the Crypt car is not finished. Sigh.

A bit of warmth for you frozen guys.

2 Years ago, my wife planted two small root stubs
beside our koi pond. The roots were from a plant
in the banana family Heliconia, variety Pascua.

They grew to be over 10' tall and flowered last
week for the first time. A total of 9 flowers in all.
The flowers look like wax and are 2 1/2 feet tall each.
We are told the flowers last 30 days or so.

I hope this photos brings cheer and warmth.

Yeah Baz, it's a Triffid but we are being REAL careful.
We have seen a few of them lurking outside our terrace
doors late at night. We keep the doors locked until
sunrise. We bring in out 3 cats as well. One of them
stung our next door neighbor but he was a nasty SOB,
so who cares?

For those less informed than you are-
brilliant call on your part by the way!

Triffid:

A Triffid can be divided into three basic components, the base, trunk and head. Triffids also have a venomous sting.

The base of a Triffid is a large muscle-like root mass comprising many thick tentacles. When dormant/docile, these tentacles are rooted into the ground and are used to draw nutrients, as with a normal plant. When active, Triffid use these tentacles to propel themselves along at a moderate walking pace. They are capable of moving faster over open ground. Triffids Roots/tentacles are sufficiently articulate to allow them to climb stairs, and strong enough to allow them to push through fencing. They are not, however, prehensile enough to allow them to use tools.

The trunk of a Triffid is several inches thick and resembles a sprouting leek. It is thickest close to the head and the base, and tapers off in the middle. A Triffid's neck can range from a few feet in height to around ten feet. It has leaf-like foliage where it meets the base of the Triffid.

The upper part of a Triffid can be referred to as the head, although it does not contain the usual sensory organs associated with an animal's head. It consists of a brightly colored, hollow, flower like aperture that resembles the top of a Heliconia or Darlingtonia californica. The head houses a Triffid's sting. The flower also contains a mucilage type liquid which is seen ensnaring insects, although other purposes are unknown.

A Triffid's Sting is a flat paddle like appendage on a flexible stalk that protrudes from the head of a Triffid like a stamen or tongue. It is rectangular in shape and has a number of furrowed ridges running along its length. When attacking, a Triffid will lash out at its target using its sting, primarily aiming for its prey's face or head, and with considerable speed and force. The Sting leaves behind a distinctive rectangular welt with linear cuts running along it. Often traces of dark green Triffid venom are visible in the wound.

Triffid venom is fast-acting and can fell a victim almost instantly.

That dad gummed thing sounds more animal than plant to me!
An ............ I thought Coastal Bend So. Texas had some weird critters.

Aside from HUGE diamond back rattlers!
There is a saying in So.Texas

Every bush has either thorns or stickers and every bug either stings or bites.
The Mosquitos there have landing lights and are licensed by the F.A.A.
But a Triffid? Well I can`t say I`v ever seen one. Recon I dun wanna either! Not up close and personal anyway. Looks pretty tho.
