Well at 9,000 ft. up these Rocky Mountains here in Utah It is one heck of a lot cooler there in August than it is down in the valley where I reside.
Sit under a big pine tree with A SIX PACK and watch for mule deer and elk.
Kerry
P.S. It will probably be August before enough snow melts off of the shady parts of the trails to go that high up anyway.
I was watching a guy on the news tonight in Oswego, shovelling snow off the roof, and that took me back to my high-school days in Bradford, Pa. I used to have to do that before heading off to school in the mornings (they didn't cancel school all that often back then!) and after school we made spending-money shovelling driveways!! We used to go out, sit on big rocks and watch for black bears! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
It's nice up here in the mountains in August, Jack. Elevation is a good thing come summer time. Can easily be 10 - 20 degrees cooler in the mountains than down in the Salt Lake valley (valley is at 4500', mountains around here get up to 11k - 12k). It's one of the reasons I moved up here from the valley.
I've hiked on snow in August as well. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
We broke 40 again today. Thats near t-shirt weather for us. Watching the weather reports from upstate New York area sends shivers down my spine though. Looks pretty bad. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif
Banjo checking in here... Oswego is about 2 hours west of me. Last I heard, they are closing in on 12 feet!!!!!. whereas here we have about an inch. this has been a VERY dry winter. We actually need some more snow. It hasen't broken 20 degrees for 2 weeks, so the temps are actually below normal, but we just haven't had a big storm yet this year.
I've only had to broom off the walks once... haven't even used the shovel yet.
It'll get above freezing for the first time in a month today, only for a day. Hoorah!
Then.......
Another storm system currently brewing over TX will dump 6-8 inches and then back below freezing for the forecastable future.
Heads up OH valley and North East, this one will be a bear.
MA and ME may get a nor'easter out of it.
If anyone is interested in some very interesting readng regarding climate, PM me and I will provide links. I will not post them here because I don't want to violate my own rules about debating controversial topics. Suffice it to say, I am not a fan of Koolaid!
