John C:

The Bangor Mall was one of my clients for years
and years. I was not aware it EVER got warm in
central Maine.

I mean really! One year I landed at the Bangor
International Airport, gate No. 1 of 3 as I remember.
There were still piles of snow beside the runway
in early May.

Does Bangor have two runways now?
The food court was a coke machine beside
a candy machine.

Dale, still just one runway. It's pretty good sized, though, at a little over 2 miles long. Once was an AFB & they flew B52's in & out. The Air Guard still uses it.

Great strides have been made in the terminal since you were here - there's now a bar (with decent food), a coffee shop, the usual airport "newsstand", and that's about it. Probably 3 gates, including the international "wing".

Snow piles in May? Very likely, especially at airports and large parking lots where it's plowed & then piled high using frontloaders. The piles last forever.

Still - I'd rather fly out of there than just about any other airport I can think of. No parking hassles, quiet, etc. (The mall is still standing - you must have done a good job.)

Here's a couple of photos to help you remember. I took them a few months back, when my son's flight returned from Iraq through Bangor.

Bill, on the right,is a WW2 vet and he coordinates the Troop Greeters there. He has only missed meeting a couple of troop flights (in & out) since 2003 and occasionally stays on duty for over 24 hours. You don't mess with him. You may remember the Greeter's area as the duty free shop, which is gone.

A Marine Amphibious Assault unit, just returned. They get free use of cell phones while they're at Bangor. This shot shows almost the whole terminal area except for the ticket counters.

You may remember - this stuff is called "snow". Our driveway is somewhere in this shot from a few days ago.

Big enough for me. People around Daytona pay a premium to fly out of our 1-runway (well, 1-long runway) airport - where you usually fly out of gates 1, 2, or 3. No lines, no delays.

I was toying with the idea of looking at moving to Maine or NH recently. My girlfriend is interested too... we'll see!

Well, here it is, 6 am Tues. and it is a teeth-chattering 45* in S. Fl.!!!! Jack, you musthave gone below freezing last night p where you are!! Brrrrr. Thin blood can't handle this. I think I'm getting that lousy cold...(oops better move to the other thread with that!)

We missed the freezing mark by a couple degrees. Growers are relieved. I'm too cold. WAH.

30 last night in north Alabama! Time for me to look for vacation property further south...

I got a miserable 8*f right now with an 18mph wind giving me a wind chill of -11*f.
That's not fair.
Cold enough to do my valve clearances?

DON'T DO IT, Barry!!!

Was 33 for a low yesterday, last nite about 40. Whooo, winter is over. Gosh that was a bad one.

This time of year, our lake has plenty of Tip Ups on it.
If you have to ask why anyone would stand on a frozen lake to go fishing, you probably wouldn't understand anyway.

And if we're lucky, we can do a bit of "skiing" too. These were taken in previous years at my local airport (12N). Kind of hard to turn and no brakes either.

Sadly I can.
I remember the Medical Officer saying, "limit yourself to 4 minutes outside out of the wind, and only 30 seconds in the wind, or else your blood will freeze"
I don't remember the temp, it didn't matter.

Yep, we did that today & are headed for 17 tonight!

My day went like this: picked up an MGB overdrive transmission I had found a few days ago - rebuilt already- in about 38-degree weather & then drove to Chattanooga on a search for a factory hardtop...found where the hardtop had been lingering for years only to find it had recently gone to the dump - wasn't a factory anyway -guy said it looked like a "Coleman cooler" & had a brass tag inside it from some company in California....but, got a tip on another OD tucked away in a barn in Tennessee but its just too cold to run up there today...will do it when I get back from Kansas in a couple of weeks.

"Winter time and the livin' is easy.
Fish are bitin' and the surfin' is high."

Here's a bit of warmth for everyone.

Played major league goofin' off yesterday.
All afternoon 4-wheelin and boulder bouncin'.
