How About Being Stranded on Vacation

That's the third company, and the second airline to go belly up.
I'm sure they won't be the last.
It's almost impossible to run an airline on a shoestring budget these days. Actually, the German wing of XL is running and has been bought by a bank.

Stuart.

I wonder how they'll get home!
They should be insured under the Atol program, that protects in case a provider goes belly up whilst they are away. The CAA will pick up the tab and bring them home.
I wouldn't mind be stranded in the Med right now.......

I,too would be quite happy in the MED right now,Barry. They are not having tropical storm winds or hurricanes.

ATOL covers the travel agencies.CAA covers airline failures. It appears that XL clients have fallen through cracks in this system,at least some have.

Happened to me in England (maybe Ireland, I can't remember now) way back when that DC10 dropped an engine (over Chicago maybe?). I think Laker was flying DC10s and was pretty much grounded, all the spillover took up all the seats on all the non-DC10 aircraft. We were flying on passes so it was a "wait in line" situation. Spent days in the airport. One of the employees went way out of her way to get us on. I sat between two drunks in the middle of the middle row in the back of a 747 to Chicago. Lovely trip.

Those that made arrangements through ATOL should be OK, others that used credit cards should be aboe to get a refund of what they spent on XL, but probably get no relief for any extra costs.

The ones worst affected are those people who paid cash up front. They seem to have no recourse.

Reports in the UK Newspapers say that another 30 airlines will go bust:

Be very careful when making travel arrangements.....

Virgin Atlantic is half owned by Singapore Air. It is one of the best run airlines around. The NYC to London run is full pretty much every day of the week. Same deal for London to Shanghai route.

VS will not go under; Mum is fine.
