Hotter plugs?

My TR3 was fouling its plugs earlier this spring, and I was not sure if it was from the "up to 10% ethanol" or something else, but I just installed hotter plugs and I will see if it makes a difference. I have not done too much driving since the change over. The evening I went out it started to rain when I was about five miles out so I turned around and headed home. Close to home the rain stopped, so I just drove around the neighborhood for a total of about 15 miles, but this is not enough of a test to have any conclusions yet...

Are you burning oil and fouling your current plugs now?

I take this quote below from the NGK website, which I think you will find to be pretty consistent from all plug manufacturers:

" 5. Heat Range selection

Let's make this really simple: when you need your engine to run a little cooler, run a colder plug. When you need your engine to run a little hotter, run a hotter spark plug. However, NGK strongly cautions people that going
to a hotter spark plug can sometimes mask a serious symptom of another problem that can lead to engine damage. Be very careful with heat ranges. Seek professional guidance if you are unsure.

With modified engines (those engines that have increased their compression) more heat is a by-product of the added power that normally comes with increased compression. In short, select one heat range colder for every 75-100 hp you add, or when you significantly raise compression. Also remember to retard the timing a little and to increase fuel enrichment and octane. These tips are critical when adding forced induction (turbos, superchargers or nitrous kits), and failure to address ALL of these areas
will virtually guarantee engine damage.

An engine that has poor oil control can sometimes mask the symptom temporarily by running a slightly hotter spark plug. While this is a "Band-Aid" approach, it is one of the only examples of when and why one would select
a hotter spark plug. "
 
Tell me in technical detail how hotter plugs equal better performance!
 
I'd say if you are getting poor or incomplete combustion, that the carb mixture and timing should be looked at first. Hard to believe these little engines would need anything special otherwise.

"TINKERITIS"..... The inability to leave a perfectly good, operational piece of machinery alone to do it's function. The absolute lust to tear into it's internals and "FIX" it!
 
Lessee now....... your triumph runs perfect and you can't stand it that nothing has broken in, oh, 3 months or more! Go ahead and put in the hotter plugs.... that'll give you the excuse later, after internal engine damage to "FIX" it, modify it, make it better.... the six million dollar car! Call LEE MAJORS!
 
Paul in fact my engine is fouling somewhat.

Ill check the Timing before I go to any extream with a hotter plug.

Btw: Strikle, that is just textured trunk paint in my engine bay.
It kinda acts as a rubber sealent and is simple to blend with a rattle can if it gets scratched.
 
Oil or gas fouling? Big difference in the cure.

How's compression and leak down test numbers?

It might just need some Viton valve seals.
 
I adjusted the timing & that seemed to do the trick for the fouling.

Just for good measure I changed out to NGK plugs..

Btw:
I've already done the valve seals, oil pressure is good.


It was a nice sunny day today till bout 4ish when we got dumped on.

(all lights, wipers and electrical systems ...A.O.K.!!)

We had a little problem with a muffler bracket, But its all better now!

Sundays drive to Litchfield looks promising....(Knock Wood)

I'll see what she says when I get home from playing golf. The tanks is filled and I'm ready to drive it, I just don't know what she has planned.
 
Oh yeah!! I meant my wife.

Now that I've read what I typed, it does look a little "Christine-ish".
