O.K., I've been frustrated long enough. How do you get to the clutch slave hose to pipe connection? Nothing in the Bentley manual. It looks like you need to remove the starter to get access. Any hints appreciated. Thanks, Mike

I managed to remove mine without removing the starter two years ago by removing the slave cylinder first, and then just having at it with open ended wrenches.

I believe most people here will tell you it'd be a lot less frustrating to change that hose if you remove the starter first. The starter isn't too difficult to remove, but it is a minor hassle to remove it so you can get to the hose more easily.

I've ~always~ pulled the two slave mounting bolts and undone the hose as it dangled. But I'm a "contrarian" most of the time.
 
that's pretty much how i did it, when i changed mine. However, my old line was so bad when I got the car that there was no dangling of the slave until I installed the new line

The starter removal and all the faffin' about that takes was always too much fer me. Yank the slave, moose the line loose and carry on... but I'm the guy who put a Europa on a lift and swapped out water pumps in half the book time too: Step one in the "book" is "remove engine/gearbox." BAH! I've got LotusFingers!
 
done it both ways and am doing it again sometime this week. I find it's rather hard to get the starter bolts restarted so I prefer to just do it all from underneath.

I've only pulled my stater once. And that was because it died. Not too much of an effort to do, IMO. But certianly not something I wanna be doing every other day, IYKWIM. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
 
Indeed. Starting with: "Disconnect battery" and goin' downhill from there. Two bolts and a couple of line wrenches and the job is half of what it COULD be...

I removed my starter when I did mine... No battery was in it yet though. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif As I recall, the starter was not hard to remove, but getting that big rubber sock back over it was a little fiddly.

My starter has a rubber cover that slides over it when it's all hooked up.

Nope; it's original from early on... at least 69 onward.
Couple of tips - I cut a slit in mine, on the bottom, an inch wide by 3" long, helps get the starter/solenoid wiring in place. Let it sit in the sun to soften before wresting it on.

I'd guess about only about 1 in 10 Bs still have one /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
