On the cooling system there seems to be two different type of clamps used:

Larger hoses - wire type
smaller hoses - traditional hose clamp

Is this the original way? I received a complete hose kit for all hoses front to back, icluding interior heater core hoses, and it came with all wire types? My Haynes manual does not go into that detail, anyone know?

The cars originally came with all wire clamps. I prefer the modern SS clamps for ease of installation, but for authenticity the wires are what you want.
 
I like the old wire style just because I prefer the original look where possible. The repros I have seen differ somewhat from the originals in that they have a hex-head on the screw whereas the originals had a round-head screw.

If you have trouble getting a wire clamp to produce a tight seal (sometimes occurs on the big hoses) you can use a band-type clamp for a month or two until the hose takes a set, then replace it with the wire and it will be fine.

For the small stuff like fuel lines (where often no clamps were used) I use the springy wire clamps except at the fuel pump where I use fuel injection clamps.

I try to avoid the common 'cheese-grater' clamps as they seem to slice into the hoses when tightened.
 
All of TRF's wire clamps are round-headed with flat-blade slots. Very original. And they suck.
 
Thanks; I'll try the wire ones, since I have them. And they are round head, not hex.

By the way, any tricks when it comes to replacing the hoses? I am changing, again, all hoses, radiator, manifold and heater, both sides of the bulkhead. I did get the bulkhead connector and gasket as well.

Remove your carpeting from the passenger side of the interior prior to installing the inner hoses. Yes, you will get A/F on them, no matter how careful you are. Please don't ask me how I know this to be true.

Install good new style quality SS clamps on the inside, if not all over. The original style suck as Bill says. I took mine off and threw them in the spare parts bin after two weeks and three leaks.
