Horn Wiring Problem

Hello All,

It seems that it’s one little thing after the other with my MGB right now, but as long as they are relatively cheap fixes then it’s OK. Isn’t it?

My horn does not work when you push the horn push. I cleaned the “horn brush” but it still doesn’t work.

But…
* If I ground the purple/black wire at the horn, it works.
* If I ground the purple/black wire that exits the steering column (under the dash), the horn works.

I suspect that the problem lies at the switch in the steering wheel, or the purple/black wire from the connector under the dash to the steering wheel is broken.

When I look down the hole that the horn brush goes in, I see just hole that goes all the way through. I would have thought I should have seen something for the horn brush to make contact with.

Do I remove both the steering wheel and plastic steering cowl to check this out, or should I do only one first? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Obtong

Yep, believe you're missing something behind the steering wheel. What is the year?

I had the same problem with my 74B...so did the PO who hooked up a seperate wire...and I messed with it for hours, broke the Steering wheel hub, and frustrated myself beyond belief!

I wish I had read Chuck's article...it is excellent and certainly will fix the problem!

Just one suggestion...try cleaning the brass horn ring on the back of the hub by removing the plastic cowling around the steering column to avoid having to remove the steering wheel. I found that a little WD40 and wet & dry did a real nice job.

It is just a wire going to ground, so the fist thing is to make sure that it is intact back to the wheel!! Then ake a good known ground, and ground it out!! If it beeps, then it is just the contact!! GOOD LUCK!!!!!

Bruce, I have to give credit for that article to Wray Lemke, a regular contributor and electrical guru. If you look at the index page of my site, you know how much I owe Wray, Gerry Masterman, and Kim De B for their contributions. I seem to be able to do the work, I just can't explain how I did it. Thanks to you guys for all your help

Thanks for all the info, folks. After I get a 1" socket I'll get started on removing the steering wheel on my '74 MG.

Great web site Chuck! Those step-by-step pictures and instructions will be helpful to me.

Obtong.

Chuck, you don't owe me anything, I'm just trying to help all of our MG buddies!
