TR6 Horn issue 1974 TR6

My horns work until I insert the key and turn it to the first position, at which time the steering lock disengages causing the horn to stop working. Then, while turning the wheel in either direction, the horn will sound at approximately the four and 8 o’clock positions only. When I turn off the key and pull it out ( at which time the steering lock re-engages ) the horn works properly. So, it seems that the steering lock solenoid interrupts the connection. any thoughts as to why this would be?

There is a copper/brass ring that a spring loaded plunger contacts with when you press the horn button. I ordered the ring and plunger which had warn down figuring on replacing both. I replaced the plunger (easy) and not the ring (a PITA). Years later the horn is working fine. The plunger is the wear item that evidently isn't making good contact. If I was you I would just replace the plunger.

Hi Bob, yeah i neglected to mention that i have replaced both of those items and they are working properly.

look for a bad earth on the steering column sounds as if the steering lock plunger when engaged is making the earth the horn should have.

I agree with bad earth (ground) check/clean the ground at the steering rack lube point.
