Horn Assembly

My plan for the past Sat was to fix the side indictor lights, and the horn, as neither were working on my 74-TR6. I worked all day and managed to get the left and right side idicators working, however the horn eludes me. I disconnected the horn to ensure the unit works...and it does- as I wired it directly to the battery. Question - I have purple wiring on to the horn, and no other wires ( I think there should be ground off the horn). On the horn relay the connections seem fine. Any way to test the relay or if is the steering wheel connections?

You probably need to change the little spring loaded electrical contact inside the horn button. They often break or make poor contact with the brass ring inside the steering wheel hub. Just make sure you order the correct one
(take the old one our and measure it's length).

Easy fix.

Too, I replaced my Clear Hooters with some REALLY LOUD horns (Auto Zone). You might not be able to see me but, by gosh, you can hear me now!

yes you can test the relay and that is one of the first steps in checking out a problem such as yours.
The wiring colours are purple, which is the live feed from a fuse, purple\yellow is the live output from the relay and purple\black is the switch wire to the horn push. Remove the purple black and using a short piece of wire touch earth and the terminal the purple\black came off. If the horn sounds then it is a problem between the horn push and the relay. The earlier advice given about the horn push is probably correct. If, however the horn doesn't sound then it may be a bad fuse or fuse holder (you have already proved the horn) or the connection from the relay to the horn. If the latter you will hear the relay 'clicking' as you short the switching terminal to earth.
The other possibility is a defective relay but you will then need some way of checking voltage to prove that or do a substitute with a known good relay.

I haven't quite got around to fixing my horn yet so I'm happy to see this post. But, while trouble shooting other problems I've noticed that I have a horn installed with wires connected on the driver side of the engine bay, but I've also noticed a purple wire and a ground wire dangling from the wiring harness on the other side of the engine bay. Does the TR6 have two horns?

Also, when I put my steering wheel back together last week I noticed their was nothing connecting the horn push to the steering column. I looked on Moss and it seems that there is a brush type connector missing. (Is this the connector that Dr. Bill is referring to?) Does anyone know the correct length connector for a 71 TR6?
 
It's worth owning an LBC just for the ability to say things like "I replaced my Clear Hooters"!
