HOORAY!! Why why why.. UPDATE 1/10/07

Re: Why why why..

Kinda why I lean toward the fuel bowls, Bill. Right/left load aligns/unaligns water with the jet pickup. Or float level is off to allow fuel at static and right hand turn load, starves it on left hand.

Do you have to be driving or does it happen when you turn the wheel left and right?

Now there's an interesting thought. Column mounted ignition switch, correct?

Re: Why why why..

It's a thought but when I put in the new (used) OD switch, I put the steering cover back on and took it for a long drive. She did great and that was the last time I took it out.

Something else to ponder:

Yesterday
Started it, warmed it up, shut it down. No problems.
Tried to restart an hour later and it would not.

Today
Started it, warmed it up, shut it down. No problems.
Tried to restart an hour later and it would not.

I'd like to try the steering column idea that Steve suggested but it will probably not start and if it does will barely run.

Re: Why why why..

Vince, you never answered the question Doc asked regarding whether it was a "fluffy" stumble or not. It may help in our long distance diagnosis.
Jeff

Re: Why why why..

Yes a fluffy stumble. Not cutting out completely. It'll still run but barely.

Re: Why why why..

Vince, if you get it started, can you run test leads back from the input side of thecoil back to a voltmeter in the cockpit?
I've seen a loose connection at the coil do this. The wire was snug on the coil terminal, but the terminal itself was loose on the coil.
Jeff

Re: Why why why..

And with that "hot start" problem I might suspect the coil being bad. Did you replace it recently (of course out-of-the-box failures do occur).
Bill

Re: Why why why..

Coil. Another thing on the list. I had the coil already here and I believe it was from a runner I had but not 100% sure. I have another here but I'd have to figure out how to test it.

Garage coil beat the snot outta this:

Re: Why why why..

What did that thing come out of?

Re: Why why why..

Go get one of Shucks/Kragen/Checker's cheapest coils and put it in- don't bother trying to test a coil, just "black-box" it. It is almost impossible to replicate the heat etc that the coil sees in use.

Re: Why why why..

Tony that was in the car when I bought it but yanked it out when I pulled the motor and did all the work to it.

I just realized, I have a new coil for the TD I can try just to see if this'n the problem.

Re: Why why why..

Don't know if you have solved this problem yet. If the new coil doesn't help you might try this: get the car started and start wiggling every wire that is associated with the ignition system. You might also want to check the wire to the fuel pump if it is electric. I went back through the thread and I didn't see this mentioned. I have experienced this issue before with other vehicles. Many times it is some stuipid little wire connection causing all the problems.

Re: Why why why..

I was given a fool proof solution. Enter it in a right handed NASCAR race /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

All kidding aside, I will trying most of these later today if I can. Weather is nice enough but I won't get outta here till it's dark and that makes it a little tougher. I'm leaning toward the coil idea as it is hard starting after it is warm. That's an easy swap. I was also going to sway my GT Diz cap & wires to eliminate that. If I can get it started, I'll try the wire wiggle method but it really only happens when it is warm.

Makes me wonder why the DPO had that odd coil & ceramic capacitor jammy in there.

Re: Why why why..

So after work today, it started right up and I did not even need the choke. Idled high a little but settled in nicely. At this point, I was able to run around to all parts of the car and wiggle every wire, hose, filter, component, turn the steering wheel, turned on & off the radio, moved the loose speaker on the rear panel (need to fix this), trunk wiring EVERYTHING - I know you get it.

Well I was stumped. I went around to the carb side, grabbed the throttle cable and gave it a good rev. Perfect. I leaned on the fender and started to shake the car to simulate car movement, and hot darn, she started to sputter and miss and I reached in to giver her gas and it sounded & ran like crap.

Whattya say now?

Re: Why why why..

Agreed. Shake components. Voltage regulator, fuse box, coil, bang on the dizzy, etc etc. Something is moving somewhere and it may not be visible.

Re: Why why why..

I shook them all and she still ran fine. I think it is float related.
