She was running perfectly on the last run. I start it up today and it barely runs, conked out, would not start and all I smelled was gas. I finally get it started & running right, try and take it out for a drive and all it does is bogs like I'm outta gas but.. when I jerk the wheel to the right, it runs fine. I went to a cul-de-sac and drove around in circles. Clockwise she runs fine. Counterclockwise, she bogs. What is going on around here?

Re: Why why why..

Fuel flow clogged going counterclockwise?????

Re: Why why why..

Just a thought, but it sounds like one of the floats might have a problem. Have you checked the needle and seats on the carbs?

Should have been a southern hemisphere car? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

Sorry, couldn't help myself. That is a weird one. I'll be interested in following this one.

Re: Why why why..

Vince, once had the same problem that was related to fuel pump and schmutz in the tank or right at the fuel line feed, not on a B but same problem.

Re: Why why why..

I'd suspect crap clogging the fuel tank feed, but if you smell fuel then it could also be rubber lines cracking from age and/or ethanol-laced fuels. Turning one direction or the other can move the lines enough to seal the crack - seen it happen. Also check the carb o-rings. They can decay from the ethanol and cause problems. Eventually they will dump fuel on the exhaust manifold.

Re: Why why why..

Yes it is HS4.

Tank is new.

All hoses are new.

Carb O Rings. ones on the bottom of the carb or the FLoat bowl O rings? These are also new and no gas is leaking out anywhere.

Could it be a fuel pump problem although the filter is full and I am positive it has gas.

Needle & seat on carb - These were taken apart cleaned and reassembled. All was working well until tonight.

Stumped.

Re: Why why why..

gotta short in the steering column? Go to a parking lot and see if it bogs down in reverse as well as forward, clockwise vs counter clockwise. Let's see now clockwise in forward must be counterclockwise in reverse, well you know what I mean.

Re: Why why why..

Think ignition system. You may have a connection that is shorting from the centrifugal force of a counter-clockwise turn, but making a good connection in a clockwise turn.

Re: Why why why..

Check the wires on your coil to see it they are shorting out against the body except when turning right, which pulls them out just far enough to not ground out. I found that problem after many hours of searching when I "cleaned up" the engine compartment to take the car to the Hellertown show and ended up missing the show. Everytime I turned left it would cut out. I wonder if that is why the coil gets mounted what seems to be upside-down???

Good luck!

Re: Why why why..

I've checked the wires on the coil and all are fine. Could it be pump related?

Re: Why why why..

Checked everything over once again and it fired right up. I held a nice smooth idle at around 2K, and reved it on & off to warm it up and backed out of the driveway. Gave it gas and bwah bogged down. Left NG, Right fine!

Re: Why why why..

I been scratchin' me nodge since you first posited this, Vinnie... I keep thinkin' I've had this symptom somewheres in the deep-dark past.

Is it a "sharp" bog (electrical) or a "fluffy" (fuel) one?

Sounds from your description like fuel supply. Have you checked the fuel pump output for volume?

Mebbe some gunk or water lyin' down at the bottom troughs of the carb bowls?

Re: Why why why..

What do the plugs look like?

Re: Why why why..

What does "fluffy" (fuel) mean? Not getting any fuel?

I have not checked the fuel pump output for volume but I hear it ticking and the filter is always full.

"Mebbe some gunk or water lyin' down at the bottom troughs of the carb bowls" HS4 harder check then the '67. I was going to take the carbs off to partially dissasemble - and they were on there so nice I purty.

"What do the plugs look like?" Well I thought I fouled them as they were a little black and wet musta been while it was cranking & cranking and not turning over...#4 had a little brown on it. I cleaned them up & reinstalled. Again she is running & idleing and revving solidly but only sputters when driving.

Timing? Stab.

Re: Why why why..

Vince, why would the float bowls be harder to check than the '67?
"Fluffy" means a soft stumble, rather than the sharp cutout you would get if it were an ignition wire shorting out. That acts like turning the key off.

Re: Why why why..

I hate to say this again but it is beginning to sound like a suspect condensor (last post only). The left-right part just doesn't make sense yet.

Re: Why why why..

I'm running Pertronix.

Someonce called me up and suggested the battery ground so I go out to check. I deceided to start it first and it would not start. It finally did and runs like crap as if I have a fuel delivery problem. argh again.
