Watching TV reports on the riots in Vancouver following their loss to Boston for the Stanley Cup playoffs...

Just incredible! Looking down at streets I wandered back in October when on vacation in total chaos, why do people do such dumb things just because your team loses the championship, setting several cars on fire, looting from stores, etc...

The Boston Bruins team had to bused out of the city by police escort for their safety, I'm embarrassed to be Canadian right now... When Calgary lost the Stanley Cup to Tampa Bay a few years ago, we didn't loot like this, we just simply went home...

Just saw a news image flash across the screen of a police car on fire... What is the world coming to, just sheer stupidity, gotta go to bed now anyway, works calls in the morning...

Have to admit I'm amazed to see that happening in Vancouver. It's a tragedy anywhere it occurs, but it sure surprised me to see those pictures.

Just a symptom. The disease is global.

On a more positive note. We did notice many of the fans in the arena standing and clapping as the Bruins skated around with the cup. Unfortunatly the burning car pics seem to get the most press.

Yep, and the more press it gets, the more it's gonna spread. :frown:

Aha! So we'd better stop discussing this in public!

(Seriously, I don't think press coverage of this Vancouver situation is going to make the general "loss of civility" and "return to animal instincts" issues get worse. That'll continue with no press coverage whatsoever, I'm afraid.)

:iagree:

The Chinese have their hands full and they're censoring the news of various occurrences across their country.

You'd think the press would have more important things to do...like ...naw, never mind, it'd be breaking my own rules.

As we all know, the press is not always a friend of the people. It's all about selling the news, advancing in position and making more money for the firm. It's always been that way and will remain so in the future. Their theory is, if you put it in print, 90% of the people will believe it, regardless of it's bases for the truth. JMHO. PJ

I'll retract my statement.

Move along; nothing to see here...

Regardless of country, I have never understood the mindlessness of people who go on these kinds of destructive rampages - over what? A freakin' game! Geez, I understand rooting for a team and team spirit and all that, but what is this stuff all about other than just a group of people with room-temperature IQs who can't express themselves like civilized people.

-> "mindlessness"

Hit the nail on the head. Total lack of responsibility toward others, mixed with a "let's have fun at all costs", and a healthy dose of "destroying things gives us a sense of power".

Yep - mindlessness. Has existed since the dawn of time. As cities become more and more crowded, as a sense of hope and purpose dwindles, as society continues to imply that "success = material possessions" - mindlessness prevails.

It's been reported that most of it was started by Anarchist (big here in the NW) and the Canuck fans joined in.
This ain't no Hockey fan

Reporter: "Hey citizens of Vancouver, your team just lost the Stanley Cup! What are you going to do now?"

Police Officers: "They're going to Jail World!"

It's just sad...... :cryin:

"Canuck fans joined in." Mindless mob mentality strikes again.
