It is a good job to do when the engine is out.

I think I need to replace the entire setup. I won't have the engine out anytime soon. Can it be done otherwise?

It can be done, but it is difficult to reach the nut on back side of the knob assembly. I do not remember if it is possible to get to it from the underside of the car, but I seem to remember replacing mine was not too bad from the top side when I had the carbs and manifold removed.
