My drivers door was getting tight at the top and my passengers door really didn't close proper, but hey, it went down the road with no scuttle shake or abnormal tire wear. The frame was really in bad shape but I bought the car wrecked on the drivers side and then some idiot ran into it on the drivers side. Both wrecks must have contributed to proper steering alignment! Marty at Jule explained it that the frame was going into a "U" shape.
I installed a 5-speed and the rear trans mounts and frame holes were about 3/4" off. (I got photos).
Roger, Patrick has summed it up, lets say for the point of argument that the gaps should be 3/16" constant, when the chassis bends nicely, the top of the gap tends to close, and it has been known that when some such cars are jacked up at the garage, if the doors have to be left open, they can not be closed.
Common place over here is to stiffen the chassis with a U shaped channel, slipped around the chassis from below and welded up along the edges.
