Hood Dzus fasteners

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to spread the metal grommet out on the engine side of the hood?

Also, I understand that many of the "keepers" on the engine are too large for the Dzus fasteners shanks.

Thanks
Ron

Ron,
Last ones I installed. I gently squeezed the fasteners together some to get the keeper off and used two flat blade screwdrivers to open them back up. Doesn't take much movement.

Marv,

The passenger side of the hood is missing the metal grommet that goes through the hood and I can't figure out how to spread the underneath side of the metal grommet.

I think if you buy some from Moss they come with instructions and I remember years ago at the dealership the guy explained to me how they are this pop on precise fit that once they are together they together forever. The last couple I did, I used a hand cut leather gasket for the front hood side and snap ring looking thing in the grove on the back with a piece of leather and maybe an O ring.

Only thing to watch is try and use a longer starter bolt with a plain section at the chamfered head end. The threaded section of a UNC bolt, as shown in the Moss drawing, is slightly undersize for the Dzuz fastener. So when the grommet is compressed, the Dzuz won't go through.

Then a fine round file is needed to ease out the diameter, which weakens the grommet.

An Unbrako chamfered bolt held with an allen key is better than a slotted bolt that has to be held (from turning) with screwdriver.

Also, using a longer chamfered bolt and packing up the nut with washers keeps the spanner well above the hood. Many a newly sprayed hood has been chipped when the spanner has slipped off, as a fair amount of pressure has to be exerted.

Last pair I installed I took a fine hacksaw and divided the underside of the grommet into 4 sections. It then compressed with much less pressure needed.
