Well we had our first nasty commute thisevening. It started snowing about 4PM, and by 5:30 the roads were grease. I passed 3 accidents (all cars in ditches) got a good view of the undercarrige of an SUV.. hopefully noone was hurt. My usual 25 minute commute took over an hour at 20-30 MPH.. But I made it home safe, with no damage to the car. Tommorow AM ought to be fun. It's supposed to snow/rain all night.
We've been puttin snow tires on cars like nobodys buisness all month.
Winter's coming early this year!

What's a snow tire?

I don't think they have those in Louisiana......

Looks we got some of that that storm here last night Banjo, There is a inch or so on my car and it looks to be raining out? I am off to see how it is out there. The weather says the western side of the mountains was supposed to get hit harder than us over on the eastern side.

I drove to Bowmanville, Ontario (and back) on Saturday.
*Lots* of lake-effect snow in the Syracuse area on Rt. 81.

I followed a snow plow for over an hour (at about 25 mph). Very few cars on the road.

As soon as I got "upwind" of the lake and into Ontario, it wasn't too bad.

Right now I'm running out to the coin-operated car wash. The salt from that drive has made my dark grey van and black trailer look white.

Anybody remember studded snow tires? I don't think they make them any more.....

Banjo, you mention SUV's in ditch. That reminds me of driving down Rt 81 in the VA mountains. We ran instantly from dry road to black ice. 23 of the 26 autos in the ditch were SUVs. We just pulled off for a long coffee break while we waited for salt trucks. We could argue all day about which car or tire is best on ice but I think it has more to do with skills and what's on your mind than anything else. Safe driving this winter!

Studded tires still fairly common around here. Can't be put on till October, and have to be removed by May.
Personally I can't stand 'em. Noisy as all heck, and only offer an advantage over a regular snow tire a couple of times a year. (unless you have some mile long, uphill, ice covered driveway)
By the drive in today the roads were just wet, and this afternoon they were dry. More snow forcasted for tomorrow. It's gonna be a looong winter.
The dingbats in the SUVs think that just because they have 4WD they can tear through this stuff. they forget that 4WD dosen't help you stop or turn much better than any other car.

Bummer...what GPS is that in the picture?

Nial;
Same price here but only Canadian
Maybe we can buy one of each, and trade at the border for holidays?
just a thought.
