TR2/3/3A Hole size for Bonnet Dzus TR3

I'll break out the tape measure when I get home. Did someone weld in the opening or something?
 
Th PO of of my newly acquired TR3 installed those "racing" style hold-downs where a 3/8" dia pin comes up thru the bonnet. This is the only bad spot on an otherwise sweet original car. Actually, not terrible looking but I would like to go back to original if I can.
 
If the pins are 3/8", then the holes might not have been molestered. The hood (bonnet) on my resto project doesn't have the dzus fasteners in, and I just measured the holes with a digital caliper. They came out real close to 7/16" (.437). This is on a post 60,000 car. I went downstairs where I have two pre 60,000 hoods and measured those. One of them came up with 7/16" again, and the other was a little over 1/2', but the hole looked wallyoed out, so I say that 7/16" (.437) is the correct size.

I came up with a max. dzus fastener diameter size of 7/16 tight or 29/64ths in the clear with a hole opening of 31/64ths, probably closer to 1/2 inch which the Dzus washer fits loose in. Mine is pre 60 original and has never been replaced so after all the years I'm sure the hole is worn. Another reason why the thing probably squeaks at idle. Oh well a little more grease should do it. $31.00 for the set from Moss. Martx-5 numbers should work and these fit both pre and post 60 except for some early TR2s with hood release.

Harry - It's your spring loaded plunger along the front valance (part of the ass'y where you put your stick to hold the hood up) that is causing the squeak. Even with the engine off, push down 5 or 6 times on the hood just above this area and you will hear the squeak. You know it's very hard to get that squeak in most TR3As and I treasure that squeak in mine because it's so original and if you don't have it, no-one can duplicate it like it was origionally.

Nice to hear from you hope all is well. For the sake of orginality I guess I won't try and stop the plunger from squeaking anymore. (tried alot of things to get rid of that specific squeak) I'm just wondering how long it's gonna take to wear a hole through the hood? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
