I had the distinct honour of meeting Sir Edmund when he gave a lecture to us in college back in the sixties. What a fascinating man! In the history books he will always be the first to have conquered Everest (of course along with Tensing, who got him there!).

I think his remarks on receiving his knighthood say it all.
