I was thinking the same thing, been on that bridge a couple times. I remember just how small the train looked down below, HO gauge! :highly_amused:

Those bridges are amazing engineering feats, and beautiful to look at. The New River Gorge bridge in VW has an annual skydiving event (876 feet vertical clearance). But I confess, I get zero pleasure from crossing (and looking down)!

I too thought of the Royal Gorge bridge, such a neat bridge. I used to occasionally get my dad to stop there when I was a kid and we were on our way from the San Luis valley to the Springs.

I was going to mention the New River Gorge Bridge, but you beat me to it. I've rafted the New a handful of times and it is as pretty darn spectacular going under that bridge as it is going over it. Have no desire to jump off it.
You have to be careful saying you have the Highest Bridge in California. Some people might take that a different way. I thought that title would go to one of the overpasses in San Francisco.

So, about 6 years ago, SWMBO and dear daughter & I were returning from Florida when we stopped for a bathroom break at the New River Gorge Bridge. A guy backed into my car in the parking lot. SWMBO went to get a park ranger (who is a federal agent). Got into the ID exchange and suddenly realized that I was surrounded by eight officers with hands on holsters. Turns out someone somewhere was using my name as an alias. His words to me "you have been very cooperative so far so we won't handcuff you." Interesting couple of hours to say the least. Needless to say SWMBO had much hilarity at my expense. Glad I had all the tattoos removed from my arms as that was how they knew I wasn't the criminal.

Mistaken identity can be a dangerous thing.
I have a fairly unusual surname (Kiteley).
Many years ago, soon after moving into a new house, we go a phone call and my wife answered it. It was from a women asking for me. My wife asked who it was and got the response "its Steve's girlfriend". My wife answered "Oh, this is his wife, can I take a message?". Apparently there was a long pause and the women hung up.
I had a little explaining to do!
Luckily when I checked the phone book there was another Steve Kiteley living a few streets away so the women must have gone through directory enquiries and been given the wrong number (and my wife, bless her, believed me after having a good laugh at me squirming and trying to come up with an explanation). I often wonder if my wifes reply to the caller ended up in my doppelganger losing his girlfriend.

With a last name like Smit and John as part of my first name - yes I am used to mistaken identities! While growing up, there was a John Smit in my school and I regularly got giggly girls calling for him. (never for me though - but that's another story)
Took a couple of hours to sort - even stranger for the guy who backed into me as he just had to sit in his truck with no explanation. What was odd was that the alias was actually John Peter Smit according to the officer - and he was Canadian. But, when I returned to Canada I went to the police and asked - they searched their data base and could find nothing - except the requisite John Smiths. OTOH we have not stopped to go to the bathroom there again - to this very day!
