Cleaning up for new carpet and noticed stain line about 2-3" above on the original gearbox cover and wondered if it could be a high water line or ?

That is a very good looking original tunnel cover - someone has taken care with it (and not leaned on the rear most area when entering and exiting the car). Those dark areas (except maybe for the forward ones on the passenger side) look like the remains of some past gluing.
 
Very good looking cover. Were you joking about high water? Seems like something I'd gin up to worry about.
 
If that cover were even partially under water, it would be a soggy mess. I don't think that's the cause. Could well be old glue or lots of other slings and arrows of outrageous fortune that befall any LBC in its 50-year lifespan.

Thanks for the replies. Not really serious, just came to mind and was having fun visualizing. Just over 20k on the car so it seems to be solid and original down to masking tape holding the lower shift boot and whatever the plug below that is for. I'm reluctant to remove the cover, though the bolts and plates are corroded. The seal seems solid all the way around so my thoughts are to leave it alone and revisit if I ever take the body off. I'm also reluctant to cover it with anything but the carpet. Just more points to ponder in my recent retirement!
