High Torque Gear Reduction Starters

I think my starter has finally given up. I'm thinking of getting a gear reduction model as a replacement.

Can anyone recommend from experience a good make and source, preferably from the UK.

My car is still positive ground, are most models negative ground?

I would prefer one that bolts straight on with no bracket modifications necessary.

I believe they come with their own solenoid so is it preferable to just bypass the existing one

Hi Derek, these are available from all the usual suspects, including Denis Welch in the UK, as well as the regular Moss, LBCarCo, BritishPartsNW outlets etc, by far the cheaper prices though I have found on eBay. 12V neg or pos they work fine, all the gear reduction units have built in solenoids, you can use that or put a jumper wire from the solenoid lead to the starter battery post and use your stock solenoid. They are just bolt in, the front machined mounting plate can be rotated for best fit for each car. On mine I ended up adding a very small shim behind the mounting plate to prevent any contact with the starter gear after the engine was running. They spin faster, are lighter, and require no modification to your car, easily removed to retun to stock starter.

I suspect they sell much the same product, though as I recall Denis Welch lists two models. Hope this helps.

Please note that although Moss was mentioned by one of the North America based members, in the UK they do not seem to provide much support for Healeys- Healeys aren't listed on their on-line catalogue, and while I've been told its possible for them to get parts it seems very difficult to get availability or pricing information, and the suppliers listed above are far easier to use. Note too that if you do buy parts and have them shipped from the US you'll pay VAT and import duties- I've no idea what those would be in France, but here they add about 30% (17.5% + 10% import duty) to a part's cost. That, plus shipping can make "cheap" American parts unattractive....
