High Tension leads and plug caps

I was wondering what you guys do when you need to replace the HT leads and plug caps. Where are you sourcing them from?

I decided to replace mine after 10 years and wanted the bumblebee look as per the old BMC competition cars. I ordered a set from AH SPares but I have to say I.m not happy with them. The caps have a poor quality clip inside them and do not not give a very secure contact on the plugs. In fact one clip has already broken. (Im not trying to criticise AH Spares here as I use them often and have had lots of good stuff from them)

Any recommendations for sourcing a good quality product?

HI DerekJ, I use Bosh connectors and hi performance stranded copper wire.Bumblebee wire is available from Moss Motors but IMOP is quite pricy.---Fwiw---Keoke

Hi Bighly, Two sources for the Bosch plug ends: Junk yard early four/six cylinder Volvo cars with B20 engines{Pre 1974] or Bap Geon.---Keoke

Hi Derek,
I was at a speed shop yesterday (there are so few left in L.A.) that had an MSD sparkplug wire display that showed the resistance of different brand wires. The 2 brands that offered the least resistance were the MSD and the Taylor Thundervolts. I thought it odd that MSD would include the Thundervolt because it had the least resistance of the group. Honest marketing? Now that’s rare! I haven’t used either, I’m running a Jacobs ignition system and the plug wires were included.

Well Greg, it would seem that you would want to use the lowest resistance wire available since the suppressors are in the connector.Consequently, I do not know how you can get any lower resistance wire than plain stranded copper wire.---Fwiw---Keoke

OH! OK, now I saw; /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hi Keoke,
True, copper good. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif Just giving options for full kits. The Jacobs universal kit came with the sparky ends installed. I had to cut the right lengths and install the distributor ends. Wasn’t too hard to do, seems to be a quality product.

Bosch offers "universal wire sets for industrial engines" (that's us, I think). 7mm jacket, "non-resistor multi-strand metallic firing core". 4 cyl- 09985, 6-cyl 09986, 8-cyl 09987. All have attached right angle plug boots, and straight connectors and boots for the cap.. un-attached. Solid wire works particularly well on screw-in cap ends. Use'm on many race cars. Ahem, your better Bosch outlets should carry them, ahem.

Hey Keoke, did I mention that Gary at Hemphill threw in a full set of original copper wires with the 99 cent dizzy cap? Sorry for going a bit off topic.

Yeah I heard you SHG, but prolly none of it is worth sod.---Keoke-- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Funny you should say that, cause I asked Gary what was wrong with them. He told me he just pulled them out of a BJ8 because the owner wanted a tune up and replaced them with non-Lucas. He said they all had a big laugh about it, but that's what they guy wanted (probably bought his BJ8 at Barret Jackson). And so, he stuck it on eBay, working perfectly, and it just ended up in my mail box. Near as I can tell, that 99 cents bought me a sod and a half. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Well SHG, I bet both of em knew exactly what they was doing.---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I just put on a set of Napa ( Belden ) 700173 stranded wire 7mm 6 cyl. semi-custom spark plug wire set. They have the spark plug boots already installed. Just cut to length, insert into side entry dist. cap and tighten the screws. The kit came with connectors and rubber boots for the dist. ends if you want to use one of the new style, top entry, dist. caps.

Hi PeterC, you probably meant Stranded Copper wire rather than "Solid Wire". Solid wire should not be used in areas of high vibration as it is subject to fatigue failure and subsequent breakage. The bosch connectors I mentioned are screw-in cap ends. They are available in right angle or straight configurations---Keoke
