I am new to your group. I am teaching a High School Auto Shop to a class of seven 14 to 18 year old girls. We pitched in and bought a 1959 Bugeye (AN5L/6206) in boxes, and are in the process of restoring the car. The class sprang from a request made last summer by two of the girls to teach a unit about cars. It is a small school in the Sierra foothills of California whose focus is on life skills as well as academics, so I am always looking for unusual projects. A friend in Reno was lamenting the need to sell his Sprite, a car he had taken apart twenty-five years ago, and things just fell into place. Brian, welcome to the forum, and congratulations on your project. You'll find a wealth of information here, as there are many of us Bugeye types on board. Incidentally, your Sprite is, in reality, a '58, even though it may be titled as a '59.

Welcome..My dad restored a Bugeye with my younger brother when he turned 16(he did a car for each of us) my brother still has it too, really love the bugeye.

Thanks for all the great feedback and energy. It has been, and will continue to be, a great project. I teach English Lit & History here, and have had most of these girls since fifth grade. They love learning and adventure, and we try to accommodate that hunger. A few years back we put together a little blue grass band with four of the same kids. (see www.the-fiddlesticks.com) and have paid for a few of the needed parts from local CD sales. The Nevada City newspaper just did an article on the Sprite, that can be seen at https://www.theunion.com/article/2006108140132 Thanks also for all the offers of help, if you look at the "Sponsors" page on our website you will see that it has been a "community" project.

Great job!

I was a high school auto shop teacher for 9 years and I had some great times with these types of projects.

We built two Formula Vees (used them for autocross), a Datsun Pro-Rally car, a Lotus Seven-type car, karts and other stuff.
My present-day college kids are part of one the best FIRST Robotics teams in the US.
We also just built a quasi-replica 1902 curved dash Olds (for parades) and hundreds of model steam engines.
Some of the young women I had in those auto classes were my best students. Today, in my engineering classes, it's still true.

One of the basic rules I've always lived by when it comes to these types of projects is:
