T-Series High-pitched whining noise

Hi, everyone
I'm an newbie - just recently bought a 1974 1/2 MGB. I've previously owned a 1971 and a 1964 MGB. My "new" one is in pretty good shape, one previous owner, no rust, but hasn't had much restoration work done. Right now it's at my nephew's house in Phoenix. He's a mechanic and is working on it for free, but doesn't have any experience with MGs. We're starting with the suspension and brakes and will move on to the engine later.

My question is this: the car makes a high-pitched whining noise when I get it up to about 55-60 mph. My nephew asked around and was told by someone that this is pretty normal for MGs. However, I don't remember it from my past. What should I have him check? Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Where is the whine coming from? Engine, Transmission, suspension?

Does the noise change or go away when the power is taken off but still in gear but comes back under power or vise versa. If so, could be differential.
Mine is a '72 and the transmission whines but is steady wether power on or off. Just maybe a little louder under power.
Check fluid levels, engine oil in the transmission and 90 weight gear oil in the differential. The dip stick for the transmission is through a hole in the tunnel behind the radio console on the right.

Welcome to the forum Debbie! I notice you are in New Mexico. What part of NM? I only ask because this forum (which I run) is based in Edgewood, east of Albuquerque.

I think it's coming from the transmission.

Welcome to the Forum, Debbie!

Try draining and refilling the transmission with 20/50 oil

OR turn the radio up! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Hi, everyone, thanks for the replies. The whining noise starts when I'm accelerating at about 55 mph and goes away when I back off the accelerator.

Basil, I'm located in Albuquerque, on the west mesa. Interesting that you are so close. By the way, I'm trying to put a picture of my car in my signature but haven't figure out how.

It sounds like gear whine in the differential. This might not be too serious depending how loud it is. Have someone check the oil level in the rear end and transmission and find a MG owner to take it for a test drive. Mine has been whining for years even when the right seat is empty. But the whine isn't real loud. It has done it ever since I have owned it and that is 24 years.

If you're in Albuquerque you might be interested in the Run Rally Rock car show here in Edgewood on 6 August (At Rich Ford just at the Edgewood exit from I-40). I'll have my Daimler there (and maybe one other non-British car).

As for the question of adding a picture to your signature, click on the "FAQ" link in the main navigation menu above and select the option "What is a "Signature" and how do I add one to my profile?" This will explain how to place an optional image in your signature.

Cheers,
