Hiccuping at 2800 rpm

My newly reubilt engine has 800 miles. It runs great, except when I'm in 4th gear cruising between 2500 and 3000 rpm. Then, the car will "hiccup"--by which I mean "cut out" for a split second every few minutes. If I speed up to keep the tach at 3000 or above, or slow to less than 2500, it stops. What in the world?

(P.S. It does this with different brands of gasoline, different roads, different times of day).
 
Have you checked the spark plugs/wires for gap and cracks?
Point gap set properly?
Ignition timing at 10-12 BTDC?
Fuel filter clean?
Fuel pressure OK?
Any kinks in the fuel lines?
All vacuum lines connected properly?
 
Assuming it's on points ignition, check point gap and try replacing the condenser inside the distributor cap (make sure you get all those pesky insulating washers in the right way)
 
How are the insulating washers supposed to sit? I have a spring coil, A wire to condenser, a wire to an exterior terminal (-?) I'm not getting any spark. Gap looks good. Brand new ignition coil.
 
tr6ster, put the small flexable wire and the condendser wire under the plastic cap and the nut goes on top with the washer. The little plastic part goes into the coil of the spring on the points. Wayne
 
I recall someone mentioning that at higher RPMs he was having his engine stall. Turned out that the wires on his electronic ignition had an exposed area that had worn through and at a certain RPM were shorting out. He also added that the worn area was not obvious so look carefully.

You can check this by giving the car a little bit of choke (will make the mixture richer) and seeing if it smooths out.
