Hi-Torque Starter Question

Just pulled the new hi-torque starter from my 1275 engine. At times when cranking the car, I'd get that high-pitched whine that indicates that the bendix isn't engaging correctly. Found some aluminum shavings where the starter mounts, which to me says there's a problem.

Do I need some type of shim? also, with the starter out of the gear, when I hook up electrics to it the Pinion extends, but doesn't spin? Is that normal, does it need resistence to spin?

Still have the question of shims, but may have found some of the problem. The rear engine plate is aluminum, or some type of alloy so maybe there's a ground issue there. In testing the starter out of the car, to get it to properly exend and spin, I needed a good ground to the starter body, one to the actual starter , as well as power to the starter itself.All worked well.

When I reinstall the starter I'm going to put it a ground strap to one of the starter bolts.

Still...what about shims?
 
I used the gear reduction starter and aluminum backplate combo a zillion times with A-series engines, I never had a issue, and never had to shim the starter. I know this doesn't help with your problem, but I thought I would let you know what the norm is, or what I have experienced.
 
Appreciate the answer Hap, that's one thing to eliminate from my efforts. Question for you--if the cam timing was off, could that cause the engine to Jam and the starter to to grind against the flywheel?

But in my opinion that doesn't make sense, the engine will
try to start for 5 - 6 seconds, plenty of time for all the pistons/valves to go through their cycles.

So Hap... do you tow cars from NJ? :yesnod:

Probably not.

First thing to do is see if the pinion gear of the starter is engaging properly with the flywheel ring gear. just possibly the "maker" of the starter adapter mad the adapter too thin or too thick. If you are using a Hitachi conversion there are shims availiable to accomodate this. See the "maker".

As to grounds..."""""type of alloy so maybe there's a ground issue there."""" not probably THERE, but in the other wiring..the ground strap from the body to the motor, the ground cable on the battery to body...the B+ cable to the starter. Make sure U r good in these areas.
 
Thanks for the help, double checked the starter - wired incorrectly..my bad.
Fixed it and now runs like a champ. Still can't get my motor started, but that's one less thing to worry about.
