I have owned a my 1959 BugEye for 8 years now. Although I have owned several other Sprites. My wife bought a Mk11 in 1962 while still in High School. I taught her how drive in it. After we married, it was our primary transportation for several years. Bought a BugEye and drove it on the street for a year, then started turning it into a race car. Took it to SCCA driver's school and got my regional license. Raced it for 4 years in regional races around the mid-west with some success. Eventually sold it when I got involved with another project racing a Dodge Colt in SCCA and IMSA.
My current car was purchased in 2014. It was restored by previous owners somewhere in the Northwest. This is a list of the car's features:
1275 +.040 (1310)
Fast road cam
10.5 Compression Ratio
Alloy Stage 1 Head
LCB Header
Weber 45 DCOE
Datson 5-speed
MiniLite style Knock Off wheels
175R13 Pirelli CN36 tires
Wide band O2 sensor
I am a retired powertrain engineer with 36 years at Chrysler engineering. Then spent 3 1/2 years at a company called ASC and a very short stint at MagnaStyer. Still live in the Detroit area. I am a member of the local Austin Healey Club.
