Hi, I've recently bought a 1960 Triumph TR3A which I have imported to France. The mechanics seem to be in good condition and I believe it's on its third engine - the original owner had it for 50 years and there's virtually no documentation about the car's past. Not had much time to play so far but I'm gradually getting down to basics, like a full service.

Main part of the project will be bodywork. Most is pretty good, but a few bits of rust here and there, especially around the rear wing panels - though a lot of work was recently done on the back panel. The BRG paintwork is very tired and a respray will be the last step: but I'm now trying to work out how much preparation needs to be done and how much I can do myself. Back to the metal...?

Being in France has its own issues, especially after Brexit, but it seems to be possible to get most parts - at a price...

As background: my first car, in 1969, was a half-built up TR2, later followed by a TR3A - both at the time when they were just rather rusty 'old cars' rather than classics! At various stages of life I've also had a Stag, a couple of Jaguars, and a Porsche 911 - all elderly and needing attention.

I look forward to bombarding the forums with questions for all you experts to answer!

All the best,

John

Hello John

Welcome to the forum.

Where did you import your TR3A from?

I would go back to metal if it were my car but then I had a lot of bondo to contend with. In places it was 1/2" thick.

You will find the Triumph section is very active so you are sure to get plenty of tips and advice for your TR3A project.
I had a very rusty TR2 in the late 1960s and as you said they were not given too much care back then in the UK.
