Crazy that I am, I'd be down there with a trailer (and something less than $6K). At least to check it out.
Those diesels were known to last for several million miles, if cared for. And if the body weren't rotted, you could be hit by a Greyhound bus and the bus would need a tow truck while you just putt-putted away.

A real estate broker and his wife were friends of my wifes when she was a broker and they had one of those, don't know what year it was, that had over a million miles on it, certified by a Mercedes dealer who maintained the car since new. They moved to Portugal when he retired, the car went with them. I didn't believe the story until my wife saw and showed to me, the million mile cert. from Mercedes. Quite a plus for durability!

Good point about market value. But in addition to that, it's the social history of a car that matters to me. Find a car that interests me, that has a strong body, needs a lot of mechanical work, contribute lots of sweat equity, and enjoy it - the sweat as well as the end product. Never yet sold anything for a profit (except my "trip" Mercedes, which M-B itself bought from me).
