Well, that was only temporary, sorry. However it will be turned off again after Christmas. However, if you go up to the main navigation, to the right of the "subscribe" tab, you should see two icons. One looks like wind blowing (that changes the windage affecting the falling snow), but the other icon is a snow flake. This will turn the snow on and off. The lights can't be turned off however, they will also be gone after Christmas.
It's ok. The user "Edit Profile" settings allows me to enable/disable "Holiday Visual Effects". I set it to "Off" a few days ago, and noticed that it disables the snow, but leaves the lights. Just by it disabling the snow, the forums became much more responsive for me.
I still occasionally give myself and my cat a start with breaking the lights.
I used Adblocker too on my laptop because of the flashing at the bottom of the screen. I think smaller screen sizes result in an intermittent horizontal scrollbar popping up every second or two.
