Hey! I'm a new member that just bought a triumph.

So my dad has owned something like 4 triumph spitfires in his lifetime. He currently owns 2, one that he drives to British car shows and another that is in decent shape but doesn't currently run. So growing up around the neat little cars, i've always wanted one of my own. However, i've always liked the GT6's more than the spitfires. So a guy in the British club my dad is in had a GT6+ for sale and i bought it about a week ago. It's a 1970 GT6+ that needs a good amount of work. It will need to be completely rewired electrically, the paint and rust needs to be removed (luckily there are FEW spots where its rusted through) then repainted, and the interior will need to be installed. I'm going to post some pictures of it so let me know what you guys think!

As soon as i get my garage up to par, i will try to keep a photo log on all my progress and keep you guys updated along the way. But let me know what you think and if you have any advice already then i'll gladly take all that i can get! Thanks guys.

Welcome Eric!

GT6's are really cool cars - you'll have fun getting her back on the road.

This forum is a great source of information and inspiration, both come in handy!

Keep us posted!

Ah another Triumph nut is born. Have fun on it and be sure to keep us up on your progress, and not every TR has to be a bottomless pit like Dales.

Eric I think you are going to have a great time working on this car and a better time driving it. Congrats

AS you take a part off of the car restore it immediately and put it aside. Than when you are working on the tub, the biggest job, and can't get motivated, just look at the pile of parts ready to go back on.

Hi Eric,

I`m glad to see you found your way here.

Enjoy the ride.

Russ

Eric, Welcome aboard. I am also starting a restoration on a 70 gt6+, not as far to go as yours but still a complete restoration. I just did a lot of work on my B and the idea of restoring parts immediately is a good one, the shiny parts really do inspire you.

Welcome, Eric! Excited for your new project. I, too, dig the look of the
GT6. Congratulations, and may I suggest you take it apart and back together
like the ant that ate the tiger....one small bite at a time.

:savewave:Welcome Eric!To the late but GREAT world of Triumph cars, unique in the world of cars.First off two important bits.
1.Remembering your the last best hope for this car.
2.The more these cars are past off to the next owner the more
character its loses.
You may get discouraged(by cost overuns etc)But as the British ALWAYS say NEVER GIVE UP THE SHIP Eric!

Welcome and great choice!
I've been partial to the GT6's myself, they really are a blast to drive once you get it going. Always worth the effort!

Hi Eric, welcome to the forum! This is the best place to be when you hit those frustrating and discouraging times as you go through your restoration. Take plenty of pictures ask any question you have and most of all enjoy the results as they come along!

Welcome to the forum. I'm one of those guys working on a Spitfire right now, so I feel some of the stuff you're going through. I just finished rebuilding the carb not but five mins ago (Weber 32/36 DGV 5A that the previous owner installed), and I'm working up a rebuild article for my local Triumph club. Once spring rolls around, it's yank the tank, and replace the fuel lines, and rebuild the fuel pump, and the list goes on! One thing I can suggest that has proven to be an invaluable piece of advice that I got from this forum. Get the Bentley Repair Manual. These manuals seem to be direct word for reproductions of the BL service manuals, which means that you will be translating British English to American English, but there is no better manual that I have come across, including the Haynes and Chiltons manuals for my Ford and Chevys. Expect to drop a little bit of money on it though, the one for my Spit ran $60.

Eric, I'll race you to the first available Bentley!! I stopped into their offices in Cambridge, MA 3 weeks ago. No inventory, no planned printing date. I backordered one expecting to cancel when I found one on Ebay, so far no luck. I did pick up the factory manual for $60.00 on ebay, from Midlife books I believe. Red in color. If you can't find it let me know and I'll dig up the invoice when I get home. I used the bentley exclusively on the MGB and it was like this forum, priceless.

Looks like the beginnings of a great car! Glad to have you on board! Lots of great help and good humor here. Keep us posted.

Eric hasn't been back. I guess he is out working on the GT6.

Eric... see ya round town soon?

So there is something i forgot to tell you guys about the car. It doesn't have the GT6 engine in it. The guy who had it before me put in a toyota 20R engine and some kind of toyota 5-speed tranny in it. Now the factory motor mounts are still there, they just have a fabricated piece of metal that extends them to allow the 20R to fit correctly. However, upon further inspection last night i noticed that i may need to have some supports fabricated and welded on the front suspension because it looks like some supports were hacked off (i'm assuming during the engine install). I'm going to try and take some pictures for you guys and see what you think. But also, do you think i should start a new thread based on the restoration of the GT6? or just start the restoration questions and updates in this thread? Oh, quick question before i go, do you know if this car is a unibody or just body on frame? Thanks

-Eric

Eric, please do start a new thread with an appropriate title. I would even go so far as to suggest a new thread for each question, with an appropriate title, not just "GT6 restoration" or whatever.

It makes it easier for those who don't have time to read every post to know if they want to read your thread.
