Those start coming into the shop, I'm out! I'll open a shop to keep vintage cars as daily drivers. Gimme an old MB "slug" any day. anything pre-computer.
Like today for instance. had an 02 Dodge Dakota come into the shop. headlights look like they're trying to tap out morse code. problem? the "forward module" that runs the headlights. When you turn on the switch, it sends a signal along a can/bus line to the instrument cluster, then to the forward module that decides to turn on the lights.
yup, a $300 module to accomplish what for years a $5 relay did just fine.
Don't even get me started on Toyota's computer controlled fuel filler door.

Look at th' V-12 Benz... Two "oldy-timey" MAF units tied at th' hip! With th' caveat that they're NOW impossible to replace one at a time. Coded.

I went to the San Francisco International
Auto Show in (I think)1980.
They had the new Buick showcar that,with
the key,would adjust the pedals,etc.,to fit you.
I had to walk away from it - I have NO need for
a car like that.I like cars that "need " me.
As Mr.T would say...."I pity the fool that has
to work on that".

Doc, for some reason the EMP thing is always in the back of my mind... I need to find a points dizzy for the Jeep. The Ol' "Duraspark" module is the only "black box" in that Jalopy.
I do have to say that when working on computacars (that's everything modern) I do like the newer can/bus systems. they really help the scantools communicate. but it still goes back to what is really necessary. one catastrophic event, and only vintage buggies are still on the road.
