Heritage Report for my 56 MkI Saloon

Country flag
Offline
I received the preliminary copy of the Heritage Report for my 56 MkI Saloon this afternoon. Somehow I had hoped for more information. My car was built on June 11, 1956 and dispatched June 19, 1956. Numbers all match. What I didn't know is that the "Main Distributor" for my car was Cooke Motors in Calgary, Canada <there is still a Cooke Motors listed in Calgary> but there is no first owner recorded. There is a note: Overseas Delivery Mr. F. Woodward. Is there usually more on these reports?

It's a real treat to fish out the history on these cars. I'm going to take somewhat of a stab at this and suggest that the "F. Woodard" may be the owner of the dealership, or the Jag franchise registered owner in Calgary. If this is the case, contacting the dealership will probably result in good info on the original owner.

There is the possibility that F. Woodard is the actual buyer of the car, but I think it's probably the dealership owner/representative.

At least worth giving a try.

I hope this helps. Let us know.

My thoughts are that Mr Woodward was the customer, ordered the car in a specific configuration, and it was delivered through the distributor. What I would suggest is that you get hold of an originality guide and check to see what would be on that car that was in addition to the "standard" specification. Back then, Jaguar used to add all kinds of things to customer's specifications..... Be an interesting project.

If you can, a letter or an e-mail to a certain Nigel Thorley, who is regarded as THE expert on Jaguar saloons, but especially Mk1 and Mk2s, might pay dividends. Here's a great book:

I was a tad surprised at mine, too.

No first owner listed.
The "official" heritage cert showed Brown's Lane to Appleyard, then to SMT in Scotland (Scottish Motor Transport).

However:

A second heritage check (non-official) showed Brown's Lane to Car and Cycle (or something like that), who was a well-known exporter, often (if not primarily) to Singapore.

Did give color, interior, not much else.

Body tag gave me engine, head and trans numbers anyway.

My certificate lists first owner. It also lists the automatic trans was fitted to vehicle ( assuming owner request as most were 4 speed OD ). The lady at the Heritage also listed fire date and mine was 7th out after fire.
