Perhaps it was never quite properly aligned, or perhaps it wasn't sufficiently tightened? or it's worn out. I don't know; I'm kinda guessing here. Seems odd now that I think of it, but in over 40 years of playing with these silly little cars, I've never had to take one of the engines that far apart! You know, like wood or some other organic matter that could have disintegrated? I wish I'd have known about the misalignment issue. I could have checked it. What would cause the cove to become misaligned?
From all that I read and look at and try to understand, there is no separate rubber / silicon / rope / whatever seal; the early style housing is the seal. The only wood I know of is the two little shim pieces that wedge into the front sealing block. (Kinda hard to believe that those little "filler pieces" actually have Stanpart numbers...but I digress!)
But since it's possible for the big TR guys to update their scroll seals to a modern type, it certainly must be possible for the "SC" (small car) gang to be able to do the same!
