Might be a dumb question, but on the way back from a show we smelled burned electrics for a few miles and then a drop in amps... Generator went out... what are my choices?? Should I convert to alternator?? are there new generators out there.... I am guessing a rewind/bearings/ect would be too expensive... What would you do

Sounds like the smoke gauge should have picked that one up.

Seriously, it does sound expensive, but IMHO worth getting a rebuild price to weigh all options.

Jack, is that you? If so, I was with you on that trip to the RTR show!

How about a GM/Delco conversion??? Check out Paul Tegler's website, here: https://www.teglerizer.com/alternator/index.html

Your's is a generator, so I'm not sure if you can swap it for an alternator. I did it to my GT6, a great upgrade after two failed Lucas alternators in 6 months. No more dimming lights, lots more electric power. However, the Lucas replacement is a pretty good one, too. If you're not worried about originality and want a better unit, definitely go with the GM.

My 2c worth. Call me (IF you're Jack!).

Hey Mark.... everyone give mark a round of applause... 60 miles in a 1965 herald going probably 65-70mph, with the driver glass out, in the pouring rain, burnt generator... so no lights or wipers.. trying to keep up with a tr6... and he never complained a bit!!! What a co-pilot!! Thanks for the link Mark, I will read up on this... I need to get the herald back on the road again.. that was too much fun... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/england.gif

Unless you've added a killer stereo and enough spot lights to illuminate an Air Force Base, an alternator upgrade isn't really necessary. Besides, the Lucas C40 generator is almost as common an item as one can find in the British Car World.

I had the original generator for my Herald (1962 1200 model, Generator date code of 11 61) rebuilt for about $90 a couple years back. If yours proves to be unrebuildable (unlikely unless there was major "fry" damage), find a rebuilt one. You might even be able to obtain one locally through a regular auto parts store...just say Spitfire if they look at you funny when you say Herald.

There are "new" replica generators out there. So far, everything I've heard about them consists of "they're very expensive" and "they're not really all that good"!

Meanwhile, congratulations for "trying to keep up with [that] tr6"!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

I agree that a good used or rebuilt Lucas is both adequate for most requirements looks right. Be aware that the new ones from Moss fit & work okay but do not look at all like the Lucas -- rough castings, different housings, probably sourced from Asia. Do not know what the TRF new ones are.

So I can get by with just saying spitfire generator?? I tried Spritbits and asked them if their rebuilt generators would fit a herald.... "I don't know" Should of guessed... Fan belt also for a spit will fit the herald??

Thanks
Jack

Jack,
I have a generator I pulled off my '63 Herald that was working ok. The voltage regulator on the firewall went bad and I went with a Delco alternator conversion. Let me know if you need the generator.

Actually, the Moss units come from India, and though they don't look exactly like the Lucas units, they're close enough to fool the untrained or inatentive eye.

At least no one would ever mistake it for an alternator! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Thanks Terry, might take you up for on it.. I just bought one that was unknown condition but was only 12 bucks.. so I should know in a week or so...

Thanks
Jack
