I was in Detroit earlier this week for a conference. Monday evening they arranged for us to have the museum to ourselves along with a surf and turf meal; both excellent. Something for everyone; some seriously cool cars and aircraft.
 
I was there in 2003 for the Ford 100th-
a really cool place to spend 1-2 days.
Did you see the Mercury Cougar XR7G that's
in the front hallway?

I am not very knowledgeable on the older American iron other than the more common types. That said, there were some very cool car's from all eras and I always like looking at the land yachts. As a "tourist", the presidential cars were very interesting and I spotted an MG TC. The rock stars cars were good, although I thought that the ZZ Top Eliminator was going to be bigger.
 
I visited it years and years ago and it was the sort of place that'd take a couple of days to seriously go through.

I was most impressed by their collection of steam engines from the late 1700s and early 1800s- the collection was larger than that in the Science Museum, London I think. Ole Henry had more money than they did, I suppose.
 
I was there on my "mancation" last year. Awesome visit.

Also did the Auburn-Cord-Deusenberg museum that trip (and had a repeat trip today to same during the MGC gathering in Auburn, IN)

Henry Ford is great...ACD is great (along with a trip the the National Auto and Truck Museum directly behind the ACD site)...the Kruse museum in Auburn is great (I was in awe with their military collection).

These are all "cannot miss" venues in my opinion.
 
I also thought that it was pretty cool
that you could look over the fence in the
parking lot,& see one of Ford's proving grounds.

Rick - a few years ago we did the Indianapolis, Studebaker, Auburn-Cord-Duesenburg loop...a great week!
 
My grandfather's car is part of the collection. His name is Louis B. Hays. It is a Huppmobile coupe - 1922 I think. At one point my Dad had a 1903 Cadillac and a Henley roadster there.
