Can anyone identify what this wire is supposed to be attached to:

It is the same colour as the one which can be seen in the photo which is attached to the engine. The loose wire is part of the group of wires which go to alternator.

Attached to engine, how? To a sensor? Look for coolant or oil pressure sensor with nothing connected to it. Does anything not work? Can't own British and not also own a VOM meter. Test it with key off, key on, engine running, all switches activated in every position to see if it is "hot" at any time. If never ever hot it probably is a sensor wire.
 
I'll take a guess! You have a later MGB RB car and have installed a different carb or converted to a manual choke? I think that is the original wire that ran over to the electric choke for the Zenith carb. They usually have a protective sleeve over them to help protect from the engine heat as it runs across the front of the engine. The other wire with the blue shielding should run to the coolant sensor. That wire is shown in this photo in the green circle.

just a shot in the dark but i have one looks just like it that ran to the air pump off my 78.
 
Motor mounts suggest a chrome bumper car so its not going to the stromberg. It looks like the wire that goes to the distributor to me. Just a guess without having a color to go by. Bob
