Help With Spridget Speedometers

Hi Folks,

I've been playing around with old British cars for 30+ years. I always assumed that when the time came for instrument restoration, I'd just pack 'em up and send 'em off to Nisonger. Unfortunately, I recent found out that their restoration shop was badly damaged in a hurricane a few years back, so they ceased their restoration services. This prompted me to take a look at my collection of Sprite Mk I and Mk II instruments. I'm building two cars that will have these instruments. The tachometers were easy to disassemble, so I think I can restore these myself. I've already replaced the dual gauges with new parts. The fuel gauges don't seem too tricky. My problem involves the speedometers.

My speedometers have very nice faces with clean odometer and trip odometer numbers. The problem is disassembling the gauges to remove the workings. This is necessary to bead blast the housings and refinish them inside and out. The bottom part of the trip odometer reset mechanism is held in place with a cut-oof split pin. The problem involves the rest of the reset stalk. Does anyone know how it is attached to the workings and is there a trick to get it to release? I really don't want to break anything.

Please let me know if you have any advice to offer.

Thanks!

I can't speak to disassembling the gauges as I've not dug in there, but as far as I know Palo Alto Speedometer is still in business and at least used to be recommended as a repair shop:

I've not used them, but they were generally recommended at least some years ago. Might be worth a ring to see if they're still a going concern.

Thanks for the advice. I'll check them out. I also found West Valley Instruments. I'm trying to avoid shipping any instruments to European vendors.

Thanks again!

West Valley is excellent. Morris rebuilt all of my gauges and my original Smiths fuel sending unit. Been 8-9 years now and haven’t had a single problem.

Ditto on the recommendation for Morris Mintz of West Valley Electric. I’ve used them on and off for at least the last 20-25 years and have always been more than satisfied.
