Hello, GTsRfine or anyone else who can help.
I have a problem with a 1979 mg midget we have just acquired. It does not seem to go into 'reverse', despite our trying all the shift patterns of which we know (the shift knob has been changed to one which is blank). Do you have any advice?

take the knob in neutral ,and pull up on it push over and up....where fith gear would be on a 5 speed. sometimes it helps to put it in first gear , first

This sounds familiar! In 1977 the wife and I bought a new Triumph Spitfire. After leaving the dealership, we drove to an A&W Rootbeer drivin and after drinkin our rootbeers, we could not find reverse to save our lives! We ended up pusing the car out of the parking space at A&W. A trip back to the dealer and we learned reverse was over to the right and then "lift up" and over to the righ and forward. The trick was lifting on the shift lever.

Yep, like he says....try 1st or 3rd...if it goes into one of them & then into reverse, you're getting syncroniser toubles!

thanks to all who answered. silent unicorn, it worked like a charm. Now, for the next question. We are missing the hood prop (which, of course, it looks like we may definitely need). We have a new prop to install (the expanding-sliding rod type from Victoria parts), there is a bolt on undersurface of the hood, but no apparent mounting site on the engine fender. Is there another mounting piece we are missing? I owned a 1979 mg midget 'cheetah' 20+years ago, but I cant remember how the hood prop was installed.
