Help with new boot floor installation.

I am installing a new boot floor in my 64 BJ8 PHI. My problem is with the final height at the shroud junction. All three supports off the rear shroud support rail were rusted off so I am trying to determint the correct height so I can fab new supports. With the floor temporarily installed, clamped to the frame, clamped to the shroud, clamped to the sections behind the rear wheel archs, and a straight edge on top of the frame extended back to the shroud, the floor at the shroud is below the straight edge 1/2" (floor not level with frame). The fit looks good and maybe I am being too fussy. The shroud has been hit but all the sheetmetal looks undamaged just very rusted. This is the last section to be installed and the frame work will be completely done! Thanks for any help and have a good day!

I have just had to replace my rear hoop and hoop supports a few months ago during the restoration of my 65 bj8. Rich Chrysler from the Healey List forwarded me some pictures that may also help you with the measurements to do the job. I will forward the pictures to you via email since I can't figure out how to add them to this message.

You can purchase all three hoop supports if you like from British Car Specialists in Ca. or maybe from other venders as well. The price is very reasonable and there would be no fabrication needed. They have a web site if you need contact information.

I think that trunk floor needs to be on the same plane as the frame, so it should come up a bit. Remember that the lower the rear of the car is, the less clearance you’ll have for the tail pipe (not a lot to begin with). Another thing to be aware of is the placement of the trunk floor fore and aft. If you install it wrong, the shroud will curve differently from the fender. You may want to do a test fit of the fenders before you commit if you haven’t already.

During the boot floor fit the car is basically assembled ie. all fenders, shrouds and doors. I have had to refit the doors and the fender contours to the door so I want to be sure and not distroy these fits. So I have the rear shroud firmly attached to the hoop and fenders and the boot floor is temporarily attached. I checked the height of the hoop off the floor as per George Haywood's picture showing 8" and that is what I have. If I clamp the floor to the shroud, it appears that the floor does slope slightly down from the center to the outsides maybe 1/8". The shroud fits ok to the inside rear fender wells so I figured this is where it needs to be. It could be that my shroud is not straight across the bottom but I do have 8" to the hoop. It would be nice to know what the origional dimensions were or at least know what tolerances were. Oh well, I shall continue! Thanks and have a good day!
