I need some desparate assistance!
My 1966 BJ8 is finally running great, as long as it is not moving! The car was vibrating some, so after looking here on the forum, I procedded to remove the spoked wheel and the hub. I have the bearings and races off, and I read about the shims...my problem seems to be the inner bearing/race wants to install so far on the swivel axel that the wheel will rub against the metal guard? Am I missing something here?

Any install hints?

Are you using a bearing set #6 where the cone and the cup are one piece or an older separate race and bearing. In any event the race or the race side of the set 6 needs to be tapped in place on the hub. Perhaps the race is not being pressed all the way into the hub as it needs to be. Some even put the bearing/race in the freezer to make it easier to tap in place. You might use an appropriately sized socket as the drift. You can even turn the old bearing around and use it as a drift. Just don't get it stuck.
 
The BJ8's have a spacer that rides on the swivel axle and provides a surface for the seal to work against and backs up the inner bearing. If this piece is on the axle the hub should not rub the backing plate.
 
I have the long spacer that sits between the bearings, that the shims ride up against...but I did not see any spacer by the inner bearing and the side of the swivel axel? (I couldn't find mention of one in the manual or Moss either?

The swivel axel does have a very small raised portion...it seems that the hub is rubbing against the swivel axel and the metal plate of the dust cover that bolts to the swivel axel...

The manual is not very detailed in putting this back together, I have followed the ideas on adjusting the hub and adding the shims...but it just seems the whole hub slides too easy all the way over against the swivel axel.
 
The one I was refering to is Moss #031-387, #86 in their diagram. It's outer diameter is the same as the hub seal and it slides over the spindle on the BJ8's after (c)26705. Does it look like the seal has something to ride against? If so, it might be a different problem.
 
Randy..you are correct..I did not remove a spacer , unless it stuck to something and ended up rolling away!

That spacer would explain what I need..although the manual does not mention it at all! Am I correct that this spacer would slide on to the swivel axel first, before I slide the hub assembly...so that the inner bearing rests up against it?

Yes, it slides on first. They can stick on the spindle but then you wouldn't be having a problem. At what it costs I would look high and low. Good luck
 
Randy, I found the spacer...looks like a bearing race! My question is, which way does it install on the axel? it has a flush side and then a concave side...because of the oil seal...I assume that the flush side is against the kingpin?
 
I put it in with the flat side against the wheel bearing. The spindle has a bit of a fillet where it meets the swivel and the concave shape helps to clear this. My installation was done out of a box-o-parts, so if I'm wrong someone please let me know.
