Help..Which Oil Filter??

Ok, I need an oil filter, and I have a screw on adaptor for a spin-on type oilf filter. The one I have on it now is a Crosland 595.

I ordered one from Moss, and they sent me a Crosland 573 (which the mounting hole is too large of a diameter to screw on the adaptor! I also got a Purolator L10241, which also has the same problem..Which Oil filter do I go with to fit on the car (preferebly other than a Fram filter)..??If I have no choice, then ill go with a Fram I guess..

The adaptor that I have on it now is approx. 1/2" diameter on both sides, and all these other filters have a 3/4" diamter hole..Can I possibly get another adaptor that is 1/2" on one side (so I can screw it into the engine) and thats 3/4" on the other side so I can use one of these 3/4" filters??

You could go down to your local autoparts house armed with the old filter and open boxes and match the mounting hole size! Purolator should have one that will match on the shelf!

Just got back from Pep Boys--I opened up EVERY purolator box and each one had a 3/4" hole, so none of them fit on my 1/2" adaptor fitting..I cant believe its so hard to find an oil filter for this car..

Well shucks, someone posted a long list of numbers for all types but I can't find it. It did not get in the Wiwi.

Biff to the rescue.

Woops, do they use oil filters. Sigh.

Okay, I missed the spit reference. So according to a spitfridget site

Oil Filters to use: Pure One filter, the number model is PL10017, if you're interested. Other filters that might be used are

AC-Delco PF-53 (will work on all models of Spit.), PF-13 - requires an adapter
Carquest 85084 (said to be a Wix product)
Castrol PH922A (all Fram numbers should be same on Castrol filters)
Champion D102 (though not recommended)
Crossland 573, 595
Fram PH2825, PH922A, PH966B, PH16 -may be too large for later 1500's w/air pump
Fram PH8A (large can) using the oil filter adapter from MkI 1147 engines, (or non airpump 1500's?)
Motorcraft FL-2005, FL-1 (large- non-Air pump Spits only)
NAPA 551312 , Gold-1521, Gold 1374
Purolator #L10017, PER-1
UNIPART GFE150, GFE119
WIX 51084

Ok, this is driving me nuts now..I just went to look at the Purolator L10017, which has been replaced by PL14670, and still, it has a 3/4" hole! Did the guy before me somehow put a 1/2" adaptor set-up on my car? I looked up a 79 Spitfire (which I thought has the same engine as a 79 Midget), and the book also said L14670..

Doesnt anyone here have a 79 Midget and can tell me what they use? Arent all 79 US produced Midgets considered 1500's?? This is driving me nuts, and the only one from that list that seems to work on my car is the Crosland 595, which is impossible to find..

Were the 79 midgets already fitted with a screw-on type oil filter, or did you have to do a conversion like the 1275s?? Im really confused now..

Hmmm, after much research, it appears that these newer oil filters require a 1/2" to a 3/4" adaptor, as I found a used one of these adaptors on ebay, which leads me to believe that all these newer 3/4" hole oil filters should come with this adaptor..My guess is that its been sooo long that the owners already have this 1/2" to 3/4" adaptor and that these newer 3/4" oil filters do not come with them...But, this is only my guess..

Can someone with a Midget 1500 verify this by telling me if their screw-on adaptor goes from 1/2" to 3/4" diameter??

This is what I found...

My '79 has always taken a 3/4" filter. I believe I use the PL14670. I think I have one of those adapters in my spare parts pile. You can have it if I can find it... but if you are in a hurry, you would be better off buying one from here:

My list of "honey do's" goes nigh on to forever right now, and it's gonna be a while before I can dig into the pile.

Try Napa and ask for a 1374. or and place that has wix filters it should also be a 1374. It sounds like you have the same adaptor that I have on my 1500

Morris, thats exactly what I was talking about (5/8" to 3/4" adaptor)..I wonder if it would be better to use that adaptor with a 3/4" filter, or just stick with a 5/8" filter (once I locate one)?? It probably doesnt make a difference I bet...

Blkcorvair, that 1374 filter appears to have a 3/4" diameter hole, per the Wix website..

FYI, Victoria British has the oil filter adapter Bass needs to use a 3/4" filter. Mine apparently had been converted before I came into possession, so an AC-Delco PF-53 or equivalent fits perfectly.
