Help - need tips on cleaning my steering wheel

My new Expedition is darn near perfect inside. The only interior flaw is the steering wheel. It is beige leather wrapped and had now darkened and does not look that great. The PO tried cleaning it with windex or fantastic. It's kinda sticky and ... well not perfect. Any tips I can use to clean it and get rid of the residue left by the cleaner used?

I have no solid advice on much built after 1975.

I'd say start with 409 household cleaner and work thru Go-Jo toward mineral spirits if still "funky"... but try it on places small and inconspicuous first! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

If its actual leather, I'd use a good leather cleaner made for that purpose. Might even try saddle soap.

I was thinking the saddle soap but not sure if I have any.

If it's leather, I'll be shocked/impressed. Saddle soap is as likely to make it dangerously slippery as clean it, IMO.

...was gonna say: "I'll eat it" but decided if it's as bad as you say, it'd pro'lly taste bad, too. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

If it's real leather, Lexol has a range of leather care products, which do a decent job. I have seen their products at my local Ace Hardware store in the car care section.

Alternatively, try a local motorcycle store. Hein Gericke has an excellent cleaner/conditioner for leather jackets that you might be able to find there.

Meguiars have some leather cleaner wipes which might do the job, too.

The leather wrap on our old Explorer also got sticky. Then it started coming apart and had to be replaced. I was thinking it was from all the lotion my wife used.

I was thinking about having it re-wrapped but unsure of what it would cost. The interior is so immaculate it even has the new car smell still. It'd be a shame not to repair it.

Have you thought about using something like Go-Jo hand cleaner? I have had pretty good luck with that and it rinses/wipes off nicely with a damp cloth! Also has lanolin in it which should keep the leather soft and supple! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

You could buy a Wheel Skinz kit and do it yourself. I did my TC wheel and it came out beautiful.

Pics? It's not that cheesy '70's wrap with the holes innit isit?

I used the wheel-skin kit on my BJ8. I got two strings, instead of the one, to do a baseball stitch. They were happy to accommodate. I'm very pleased with the end result.

Do you have pics?

That's what came on my TC when I got it. Soon after I removed that horrible thing and installed a wheel Skins wrap. Here's the best photo I can find. If you want a better one let me know and I'll take one tomorrow.

Wow that is impressive. Where is that kit from? I doubt they would have the beige leather from my Expedition but would make a nice source to pursue if I ever want a leather wheel.

I got it at Moss Motors. It's a Wheel Skins (sp?) brand. If you go to another source, I'm sure they would carry the size and color you need for the Expedition.
