Bob - you reminded me of another old technique: take a magnet and slide along the shaft of the screwdriver, about a dozen times, always in the same direction. That magnetizes the screwdriver too. And no sparks!
Tom,
That's interesting. You remoinded me of a gadjet I bought for a few dollars that is supposed to do the same thing. It's red plastic. I seem to remember you put the screw driver in one way to magnitize and another way to de magnitize. It didn't work very well so it's in a drawer somewhere. I'll have to try your method. Although the sparks do add to the mystique.
The wire method works very well, I've got screwdrivers that are still magnetized after decades of use. If you want a stronger magnet, use low voltage stranded wire (Romex is hard to wind into a tight coil) and wind more turns of it. Here's a little setup I threw together, to remagnetize the flying magnet in a TR3 speedometer:
The light built into the head makes it a lot easier to see down the hole, and the magnet is strong enough to pick up large bolts.
Also FWIW, if you have an old fashioned Weller soldering gun, it makes a passable degaussing coil. Hold the button down, pass the screwdriver into and then out of the loop at the tip, then release the button.
Randall,
I must be getting old. I have one of those soldering guns and didn't realize it's old fashioned.
Something similar happened when I went to Florida a couple of years ago. I needed a few parts for my Penn reels. When I asked the guy in an old tackle shop he gave me a strange look. He wanted to see the reels. I brought them in and he got on the phone to a possible source. I heard his say "Yea they look like new". i almost felt bad for using these museum pieces during 2 weeks of hard fishing. I will admit that I bought them around 30 years ago when I lived in Orlando and fished a lot in the ocean. I got a lot of comments from other fisherman who recognized them.
