Help! Need "guy stuff" suggestions!

We're off on a west coast road trip – we started in Ashland OR and meandered south along the coast as far as Mendocino. Now we're headed inland to the Nevada City area for a few days and then to Sierra Madre for a week or so. Eventually we'll head for AZ (Sedona & environs) and finally to Moab UT.

The reason I post this is that I need some suggestions from locals – I'm looking for “guy stuff” to do, specifically car, plane, train, or similar museums and/or events. We've been to many of the well known museums but I'm sure there are dozens of lesser-known ones to visit. We may try to get the the Cars & Coffee in Irvine if it's being held this time of year – I haven't checked their website yet.

Any ideas? I need alternatives to art galleries!

TIA

Depends on your route? Blackhawk museum in Danville or the Nethercutt & Petersen in LA.

Re: Help! Need "guy stuff" suggestions!

While you're in Sierra Madre you'll be 30 minutes from me. Feel free to swing by if you need your old car fix. As for things to do, I'd highly recommend visiting the Nethercutt Museum. It's one of the finest car collections I've ever seen. Be sure to call ahead and arrange for a tour of the main building. The wives enjoy this museum as well, because it isn't just cars. There is also antique furniture, and a collection of old music machines, including a massive pipe organ larger than the one at Radio City Music Hall. The tour ends with a concert from the various music machines and organ.

Also consider visiting the Pederson Automotive Museum in West LA. If you're in the area over New Year's, we have an annual fun run in the Malibu area that tours many great driving roads through the Santa Monica Mountains. The turnout is usually a majority of British sports cars.

Down in Irvine is the premier cruise-in on the planet, Cars & Coffee. This is where you see cars you've never even heard of, and maybe even multiple examples! It's worth the sometimes horrible drive through the city to get there and back.

Near LAX airport there is also the Automotive Driving Museum, where you can give a donation and get a ride in some of the museum cars. They have car shows there sometimes, so you can always call ahead to check their calendar.

Lots more to do as well, from swap meets to club events. I'd be happy to help you figure out what's happening while you're in the area if you want to shoot me your travel dates.

Re: Help! Need "guy stuff" suggestions!

Up near Sedona, the Jerome Mine was a interesting stop.

Re: Help! Need "guy stuff" suggestions!

When I was out in Anahiem in 2006 I stopped in at the Marconi Museum. It's a personal collection, but for a mere $5 donation they let me wander through it. They do lots of childrens charity fund-raisers there as well.

I've been to the Pederson Museum a couple of times. I'm a fan of their gas pump collection.

Re: Help! Need "guy stuff" suggestions!

Is the Cunningham Museum still open in Irvine? I used to be pretty cool.

...The train museum in Sacramento is a MUST, it is just fabulous, they even have a "Big Boy " there, gotta see it!!!

Re: Help! Need "guy stuff" suggestions!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I've been to some of the places mentioned but never the Nethercutt. I wasn't aware of that. Don't know the route yet - we make that up as we go.

Doug - bummer! We went through Eureka and checked out the old town section there. I ~knew~ I'd heard of it somewhere.

I'll write all these down - thanks to everyone. Steve S - I'll PM you if a gettogether looks possible.

Thanks again.

Re: Help! Need "guy stuff" suggestions!

Plenty of natural stuff near Moab, UT. The national parks in UT are all great, and worth a pop in. Also, do check out Dead Horse Point (state park), just outside Moab. A great view. Goblin Valley state park (west of Moab a bit) is quite something as well.

Re: Help! Need "guy stuff" suggestions!

Stop by Moss in Goleta!

Re: Help! Need "guy stuff" suggestions!

In all honesty, Moss isn't much of a stop. It's just a sales counter with a warehouse behind it. I wouldn't make a special trip there, unless maybe you're taking the coast route through Goleta anyway.

Re: Help! Need "guy stuff" suggestions!

Thanks again. Looks like the Nethercutt is a "go" if they're open when we're nearby. We're currently in Grass Valley CA, next to Nevada City. Great bar in the old hotel there.

Good suggestions re Moab - I've been to Dead Horse but not the other. My son lives there & was a river guide for a while so he's a great resource.

Merry Christmas all.

Re: Help! Need "guy stuff" suggestions!

Doug, Mea culpa. I should have. When we planned the trip I thought we'd be strapped for time in the early part (up north) and that we'd have spare time down south. (We have some business stuff to do in & near Sierra Madre). We'll be back - my wife likes to visit the north coast & we have a (very) small place in Grass Valley. I promise to get it right next time.
