Help. Leak from sump cover on bottom of J-OD

If the bolt bottomed or bound in the hole, that could certainly be the root cause of your leak.

Kind of hard to tell, but your photos make it look like your old gasket was quite a bit thinner than the ones I got from TRF. If so, that might help as well.

Anyway, if you can torque the bolt to the prescribed 6 ftlb, I don't think you need a heli-coil. Might be something else wrong, like a buggered thread or FOD in the hole, but not stripped threads.

Replaced the gasket; used Hylomar sealant; new screw in "bad" hole.
All six torqued to 6 lbs. Tried like heck to clean the dripping/seeping
oil from the sump onto the sealing surface before placing the cover.
Success is questionable.

How long do I wait before refilling the tranny and crossing my fingers?

24 hours. Then you can get a smaller pan, maybe even an aluminum pie pan. One of my favorites and it looks good in the garage.

Check the pan for flatness using plate glass (window glass etc.) You can usually see any high spots using clear grease (like petroleum jelly). Do the best you can to flatten high spots.
Take the new gasket and apply a silicone sealant to the gasket and fix to the pan...place the pan on the glass and put a weight on the pan so the sealant spreads evenly. Let dry overnight.
The sealant will fill any remaining high spots/gaps and dry with the gasket flat. Use a replacable non hardening sealant between the pan/OD body (hylomar).
BTW, use an exacto knife/razor to clean the internal edges of the gasket of the silicone sealant prior to mounting.
Worked like a champ on my oil pan and that has the same issue as to flatness.

I'm going to Nation's Burgers before tommorrow night. Great hamburgers
and they sell super good pies.

When you order a piece of pie there, it is on the menu as a "regular,"
piece. They get you, like: I'd like a piece of lemon cream pie, please.

They say: Will that be a regular piece?

Sounds innocent enough, so: Yeah, I'll have a regular piece.

When it comes, a regular piece is a quarter of pie!

I plan to save the pie tin.

PRB,

That's a great idea that I never thought of. However, in jest, I was referring to using the pie pan to catch any small leaks instead of a normal size drain pan for the usual TR6 leaks.

Gottcha, Paul. Actually, I'm hoping to seal it, one way or another.

Considering a rather unortodox approach which shall remain secret
untill it proves more valuable than idiotic. Next few days shall
be dispositive.

No need to wait with the Hylomar, IMO. I filled mine just as soon as I could find the pump & the MTL.

Yup. If ya used Hylomar, fill the unit. That stuff doesn't "cure".

Wrigley spearment?

Close, Don, close...but no, not Wrigley Spearment; but
you got the right idea when you hear me say unortodox.

As I write (or we speak), and as it develops, I'm further
reluctant to show you. Nonetheless, while it's on the
jack stands, I'll drop it down tommorrow, I think, and
fill it, placing the pie tin Brosky mentioned, just in
case.

OK Sherlock, you can reveal the mystery to Dr. Watson and the rest of us anytime now!!

See what you started Frank???? Suspense Theater.
